It seem this may a case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is usually associated with a stressful in event in the past the effect of which appear to last on. The question is why should stress hormones still affect your emotions, when the traumatic event is in the past and NOT in the here-and-now.
