Re: To Waterbug, fasting for weight loss

That's inspirational to see that you have used fasting similar to my plans to lose weight. Food can be an addiction and there will be slip ups but as long as you stay on track is what matters.

I know Dr. Fuhrman doesn't recomended fasting to lose weight because from what I've gathered he wants people to learn how to eat properly first so they don't ruin the benifits of the fast by slipping back into old habits. Then the weight you gain back if eating junk is worse for you then when you started, like more plague around your heart. He wants people to learn new habits first. Also his theroy is that when your body doesn't get enough micro nutrients/nutrient rich foods then that causes your body to crave more foods as a way of trying to get more nutrients it needs, so you feel like eating more, and get fat, but when you eat high nutrietnt foods, you end up craving less food so you end up eating less and stay skinny and healthy.
Then there are more benefits to fasting when you have less weight to lose, like your body can focus on breaking down things like benign tumors when there is less fat to get rid of, but I wouldn't fast on my own with out supervision I was skinny.

I think fasting is a great way to lose weight as long as you don't slip into the same bad habits after fasting. Which I realize is the hardest part of it. I realize that I risk making my health worse if I do eat junk afterwards.

The benefits of fasting first before making a major dietary change it that your body will easily adjust to the new changes, making it easier to stick to the diet.

As for metabolism. I forgot where I read it but I think it takes maybe 6 weeks for your metabolism to return to normal after a fast. So in between and after fast I plan to eat very carefully. I plan to eat raw fruits/vegetables and steamed vegetables and legumes with no added salts or fats.

I'm on day 2 of a fast. I don't know how long I'll go, I'll listen to my body and see.

It's interesting to look at some of the old posts, a lot of the same issues are raised. Posting on this forum is helping me stick to the mindset of fasting, it's a great place for support.
