dengue fever and iodine

Hi, I have a couple of questions about Iodine and its effect on viruses. I know that Iodine can kill most viruses, but does anyone know specificly if it can kill dengue fever or malaria, I can't find any information about this. The reason I ask is that my Dad lives in North Queensland and there has been several outbreaks of dengue fever in the last few weeks. I'm worried that if he gets it he may die. My Dad has had heart surgery last year because of damage done from chemicals during the vietnam war, (he is a veteran) and this has made him very weak.

I spoke to him about the malaria, (he had this years ago when we lived in Malaysia), and he seemed to think that Iodine was used to prevent people contracting the disease, (iodine and quinnine). I remember having to take something as a child that tasted and looked remarkably like lugols. Could this be the case??

Finally, would it be OK for my Dad to take lugols, even at a lower dose, without it damaging his heart???

Any thoughts are welcome,

spud
