Iodine/Kelp question

Hi, i'm a 33 yr old male, having many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism but still not sure if I really have it - my TSH test came back at 5.2, which indicates mild hypothyroidism, but my question is , before having the test done, I had already begun to suspect I had hypothyroidism and started supplementing iodine, initially with about a teaspoon of kelp a day, and then 2 drops of Lugol's for about a week - could supplementing Iodine have caused my TSH level to jump up, giving a false positive for hypothyroid? I ask this because my doc is probably going to put me on Synthroid or some form of T4 , should I take a few weeks off Iodine and kelp and have the tests redone before starting the drugs? thanks
