What MVP is
I read these posts...I have to say that MVP is NOT caused by Stress! it is a physical condition caused by genetics.
Mitral valve prolapse is when the mitral valve does not fit properly over the aorta, this causes it to "click" because blood back flushes into the arteries.... Most people are born with it but are not diagnosed with it until later in life. I was diagnosed in 1995 and have done much research on the subject, As stress DOES affect the way our body reacts to the MVP it is not the cause of it. MVP can cause chest pains (that feel like a heart attack) Tachycardia (racing of the heart) and Palpatations (like your heart is jumping out of your chest) It can cause you to be Short of breath as well...I have OCCASIONAL abnormal EKG's as MVP doesn't show up on the ekg's it is diagnosed with an echo cardiogram, which is like a sonogram of your heart. At times on exurtion (Cardiac Stress test) it will cause Abnormal EKG's because of the work the heart must do to perform its best.
Unfortunately the only meds that have worked for me are Inderal, Verapamil and Nitro Glycerin when things get really bad. I have to go for a Nuclear Stress test in the next few weeks to determine how bad things are and if there is a blockage somewhere...They also perform a Tilt Table Test and possibly a heart cath can help to eliminate symptoms......
I hope this helps with understanding this disease....
