Many southern people are democrats because of their immediate heritage. If they examine their belief systems, perhaps most of them will realize they are actually conservatives.
The terms Democrat and Conservative are not mutually exclusive, the same as Liberal and Republican aren't - though the two parties have become much more polarized into Liberal Democrats and Conservatived Republicans the past few decades.
The transformation from conservative Democrat to Republican in the south has long since been accomplished. Thanks to the past eight years, the pendulum has swung back the other direction a bit.
I fit none of the above labels, having been all of them at one time or another and then realizing the game that was being played on us.
