Re: Liberal and conservative summed up quite nicely
"Isn't there ANYWHERE for the rest of us to go?"
The reason Obama is doing so well is that he is a charismatic person who understands how to use rhetoric to make people feel good and trust him.
The sad fact is that we need a person who can "package" a genuine alternative in a way that people find truly inspiring.
So the first thing we should do is to trust (pray/intend) that such a person will arise. Imagine Ron Paul x 10.
In the meantime, we need to educate people. People need to understand that our country's legacy is one of self-reliance -- that our Constitution was designed to protect our freedoms, not to create a big
Sugar daddy to shield us from life's bumps and bruises.
Like him or hate him, Clarence Thomas has done a beautiful job articulating the need for us to educate ourselves about the Constitution.
"As I have traveled across the country, I have been astounded just how many of our fellow citizens feel strongly about their constitutional rights but have no idea what they are, or for that matter, what the Constitution says. I am not suggesting that they become Constitutional scholars -- whatever that means. I am suggesting, however, that if one feels strongly about his or her rights, it does make sense to know generally what the Constitution says about them. It is at least as easy to understand as a
Cell Phone contract -- and vastly more important."
How can we expect to embody this country's political ideals when so few of us even knows what they are?
We're up against it because, for starters, our educational system has been hijacked by radical leftists whose aim is to indoctrinate young people into a socialist, Europeanized worldview. It's going to take some work to undo the damage -- but IMO that's as good a starting point as any. (As is fighting for better food and a cleaner environment -- we'll make better progress if people are less stupified by diet & exposure to toxins.)
It might take a generation or two. But so what? We're fighting a cultural trend that is nearly a century in the making right now.
Let's look beyond the Bush/Obama/McCain soap opera and think about how we can set the stage for a renaissance 10 or 20 or 30 years from now.
