head lice is very unpleasant but not impossible to deal with. when i taught preschool, it was a regular occurence. not only were parents frustrated with the over the counter pesticide shampoos ineffectiveness but some children had terrible reactions with patches of hair falling out.
i live in the tropics and we found that good old coconut oil works well. it slows down the bugs making them easy to remove. it also helps make the eggs slide off the hair. we manually remove what the fine tooth comb can't. it's tedious but effective.
bonus, shiny, glossy hair. :)
i read in a child magazine that margerine can be slathered over the hair and scalp and then the hair covered with plastic wrap. this is apparently, very effective.
