I know there are many people on this site that have used his formulas and report good results...but I always wonder what they mean by 'good results'.
Every reference that I am aware of describes senna, cascara sagrada and cape aloes as stimulating laxatives...that when used with any frequency can weaken bowel tone, inhibit normal peristalsis that results in dependence and also lead to a loss of electrolytes, particularly potassium. This can begin to occur in as little as 1-2 weeks of consistent use. These are the first three ingredients in Formula #1. While these herbs can stimulate a sluggish colon while they are present in the bowel, this is not addressing the underlying causes of the sluggishness...it is merely using herbs in an allopathic manner to address symptoms.
As a CHT I see people all the time who have been unable to move their bowels without the use of laxatives. Although they are not using his specific formulas, they are often using one or more of these herbs and they are definitely habit-forming when used consistently over time.
