Re: Officer Breast-Feeds Quake Orphans

Nobody was able to stop me, and what I believed was best for my baby! As a person who has been quite shy for most of my life I look back and am amazed at how strong I was in sticking to my convictions. I did my best to teach others, while at the same time look for ways to ease my troubled spirit at my dismay of others' feelings towards me.

That, plus find the best nursing shirts I could find so that my daughter didn't have a hard time. There are times when you will find yourself in public, and just can't leave, and your baby must be fed. I found a wonderful shirt I could button and unbutton just below the breast, so that she could nurse openly, yet I was still "covered". I looked like I was just sitting there holding my baby.

I can remember telling my mother-in-law "I don't care what you think, I know this is best for her." All four of her adult kids have all kinds of health problems. She told me her "milk wasn't any good because it dried up at six weeks." I told her many doctors have pushed the formula at that time because they are ignorant of the fact that that's about the time when babies have their first real growth spurt! They nurse and nurse and nurse and cry and cry and cry because they are not getting enough, but this is necessary to stimulate the breasts to make MORE milk. It's so sad more doctors don't teach this to their patients it makes me want to cry.

I was fortunate. My chiropractor's wife at the time belonged to La Leche League and taught me these things when I was pregnant and told me of a wonderful book to buy at the time to learn about breastfeeding...there are many out there. When the student is ready and willing, the teacher will appear. The chiro's wife even told me (when discussing positions) that to drain all the ducts you can even occasionally "hang" your breast over your child like a cow. I never thought I'd do that until the day hubby and I were stuck in traffic. I refused to take my child out of her carseat (for safety reasons) so I unstrapped myself and let 'em hang over her like a cow. She was happy, I drained all my ducts, and hubby was happy cuz baby was no longer crying. I must've been a sight.

Anybody out there using tollroad from Chicago to Toledo, Ohio stuck in traffic remember seeing a woman doing this? That was me!

Thank you for this conversation, Beth.

Breast is best!
