Odd shifts

I work in a small community where the local paper mill is the largest employee. They pay very well $17+ to start, but I don't know how people work their shifts. I have a friend whos husband works two days on (12 hours I think) one shift days, 24 hours off then two days on an opposite shift nights, then four days off. Which is pretty cool but I don't know how they keep their bodies and minds straight. She has to be really quiet when she is at home on the days he works nights. I would think you could get really messup up with a work schedule like this. Besides its repetitive work.
