I love to run, but due to some injuries, those days are in the past. What I've found helpful is leg lifts, but don't bring the leg all the way down, just have the bar up where your leg travels with the weights maybe 6-8
inches to the full extension. Half squats, dont go all the way down, that add stress also.
And finally, and I don't normally recommend meds, but what has slowed down the grinding and pain for me is Synvisc. It is injected into the knee, and lasts up to a year, for some people, even longer. It isn't like cortisone which deteriorates tissue. And, take your glucosamine, MSM, condroiton (however you spell it)...and good luck.
Also, how about while he runs, you ride your bike, that is easier on the knees and hips.
