The things I shopped for in a IT is:
1) Sturdy! I look for hospital grade that can support up to 300 lbs (even if you weigh half of that).
2) Comfortable stirrups/leg holders. The mechanism for holding your ankles makes all the difference in how comfortable you'll be. They should also appear sturdy.
3) Price - I received mine off Ebay for $300 maybe 5 years ago and have been very pleased with it. I actually saw another brand at Costco a few weeks ago that looks even better than mine for $195. Better ankle supports, just as sturdy, and even a built in pillow/head support.
I totally agree with your comments about how addicting it is. As I mentioned before, I couldn't be without some kind of inversion device. After I haven't done it for awhile, my body needs a circulation/blood flow/oxygen fix and lets me know about it.
Not to mention a really great way to unwind quickly after a stressful day.
