How about being involuntarily admitted to a psychiatric hospital; could that possibly be a valid reason why someone wouldn't contact someone they loved? And if they were forcibly dragged into seclusion for ridiculous things, and denied access to the internet, the phone, their attorney, and any other means that they thought of to make contact, would that be a good enough excuse?

Hey, good women are hard to find, too! What about the man taking the lead and fighting for the woman? Or has feminism hijacked chivalry, too?
