What good is re-incarnation if you don't remember your past life?  The net effect wouuld still be that as far as you were aware, mortal life ended at death.

"Prior to modern medicine half of all children died by age ten."

Actually, that should be "prior to modern hygiene, better nutrition and better access to medical treatment".  Thanks to what we are doing with our toxins, foods and drugs, the trend is reversing again.
