Re: fluoride toxicity depends on iodide supply...
"Calcium is a tricky issue."
I do not think it is any more "tricky" than any other "supplementation". Each needed mineral\element has its time and place... learning when and how much you need, and of "what" is the "tricky" part, but even this can be learned.
"Japanese women do not have near the rates of osteoporosis that American women do, and they do not eat dairy...or take calcium supplements..."
Generally, They eat little to no dairy...
Japanese dairy consumption...

They do take calcium supplements, AdvaCal being one of them.
One study from the 90's showed that over 22% of them took calcium supplements. I believe that was about the time or a bit before the studies came out that showed many in Japan to be calcium deficient, especially children. This had something to do with dietary changes, among other things, just like here in the states.
"Is it a lack of calcium or a faulty calcium metabolism ... ?"
It could be one, the other, or both... as I stated in a previous post, toxins can mess with calcium metabolism among other things, including using up calcium stores to neutralize the threat. Sodium can compete with calcium for uptake by the body... potassium can mess with calcium metabolism as well...
As I have stated countless times... it all works in concert together. Each balancing and complementing the other in a synergistic dance.
I think it is easy to find proofs, pro or con for most anything as too much can be as bad as not enough.
Knowing how much is the trick, and where we, as humans most often fail in discerning.
