Re: I just got mirena 9 days ago, is this normal?
Ugh, sorry your doctor did not tell you anything!
First, yes, bleeding/spotting randomly for 6 weeks is normal. Cramps are normal also, but should improve gradually over time. If they get worse or like sharp pains, contact your doctor right away to check for cysts (painful but usually harmless) or uterine issues that can happen if you have the IUD put in while your uterus is still contracting after birth.
Hungry-- when you're nursing, so common! I can't tell if I had that from the IUD, I just always have it when pregnant or nursing (ie the last 3+ years :-)
Bloating-- I never notice that, sorry. Try drinking more water and maybe exercise? Those help me for water retention.
Breastfeeding-- here is where it gets funny. It seems certain that some hormone is excreted. In fact, I believe the "mini-pill" is the same. I'm not sure how much hormone, or if it can have any effect, which I'm ashamed of. My doctor says it's OK, and I believe him because mini-pills have been around long enough that they'd know if there was an issue.
What I CAN say is that I was on the minipill with my son (now almost 3) and daughter (just now 1) and the Mirena IUD also with my daughter. I just removed the IUD 6 weeks ago and weaned my daughter this week. Both children are unusually strong, healthy children with no medical issues whatsoever, no allergies, weight problems, etc. Unusually happy children too! And my daughter showed no effects from when the IUD was removed.
Good luck, don't panic but do educate yourself so if something does go wrong, you will know what it is and be able to get it fixed ASAP!
