Re: I just got mirena 9 days ago, is this normal?
Hi. I also had the mirena put in after my third child (breastfed) I have to say, my experience breastfeeding her was dramatically different from my first two. The main difference was that my breasts always KILLED. It drove me crazy when I went to the dr to see if it was mastitis, or possible from the mirena, and she of course said that mirena is localized, so that wasn't it, and that I must not have her latched on right. I breastfed my first son for 11 months, and my second for 12, so I was pretty darn sure that I knew how to latch on...So, with that reaction, it was pretty hard to get any info about the effects of the mirena on breast milk. Any one I talked to gave me the same response about the horomones being localized...blah blah blah...
So, all I can say is that my breasts were allways tender, and feeding hurt all of the time, wich made the whole experience not pleasureable. I stuck it through for 11 months- and I don't think it affected the quantity or quality of the milk, because she gained weight right on schedule, and when I pumped it looked the same as it did with my other two- but it just wasn't the same "calm" feeling that I had with my 2 others. I know this isn't scientific but maybe it will help.
