Re: Those now with thyroid problems after Mirena... a question.

I started to experience thyroid problems after getting Mirena. I had it removed this past July after having it for a year 1/2, and I continue to experience thyroid problems to this day. I haven't had a baby for 12 years. I had my thyroid levels tested and they came back "within range". However, because I am experiencing so many of the symptoms of hypo-thyroidism, my doctor suggested that I may have something called "Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome". I went to a really informative website: wilsonsthyroidsyndrome.com and monitored my body temperature as they instruct. And under my doctor's care I will be starting treatment for that in about a week. I am hopeful that will help. My doctor in addition to being an MD practices homeopathy so she is open minded to alternative treatements, thank goodness, because after the way the mirena messed me up, I am less than anxious to jump back into a traditional medicine approach to my thyroid problem.

The symptoms I started experiencing since getting Mirena got really bad earlier this year and continue to this day. They are: weight gain (I went from 135 lbs to 165 lbs in the past year); extreme fatigue; hair loss; low body temperature; low sex drive; irritability and depression.

Through this forum and other sources, I have learned that Iodine is needed for proper thyroid function. I checked my Iodine levels using a test I found on the internet and I seem to be really depleted in iodine. The test is, to take tincture of Iodine that you can get at the drugstore for about $2 and paint a 2" square section of your skin, inside upper arm is suggested, with the iodine tincture. If the stain disappears within 8 hours you are severely depleted of iodine. If it disapears within 24 hours, you are still depleted. If it stays for 24 hours, you are fine. About a month ago, I started taking brown seaweed supplements (I had to buy them online) in order to help bring my iodine levels back up. It seems to have helped a little. Taking the same iodine tincture test last week, my iodine levels aren't as depleted as they used to be. And the supplements seem to give me a little more energy. Some people report they have been able to lose weight more easily while taking the supplements too.

Don't know if any of this will be useful to you, but figured I'd answer your question about the baby and share the rest with you as well.
