My first fast ever, plus a Q about fasting for a sick relative
Hi all. I am 52. I work from home and get little exercise as I sit at a computer most of the day. Just over a week ago, my BMI got up to 42. My ankles were swollen, and my knees and back started to ache. This made me even less active. I have tried loads of diets, and they just don't work. Then a friend suggested water fasting. I read up on it, and tried it...
In one week I lost 10Kg! If I lose another 48, I will be BMI 20. I never realised my body could do this, it's great! How silly of me never to have tried it before!
So far so good, I am not hungry now, was not even hungry at the start. However I have read posts here and completely recognise the problems to do with boredom. I am so bored. Yet, I am determined to get down to BMI 20 in the shortest possible time, for the sake of my own health.
In the initial excitement, I vowed to myself that I would fast "to completion", i.e. until I felt hungry again, which would hopefully be at around BMI 20-21. If I lose on average 1/2 Kg a day, I calculate this would take me into January or February. Of course the problem is Christmas is in between.
So I have an open mind. Would it be best to try and fast to completion, or would it be nearly as easy to come off the fast towards Christmas and start again in the new year? I am open to any suggestions. But even if I try to do it all at once, maybe my will power will fade in the festive season, so I am thinking of a backup plan.
My aim is to reach BMI 20-25 as soon as possible, and that involves losing 40 - 48Kg. Eventually I would like to be BMI 20, as I was 20 years ago, and then perhaps try a calorie restricted diet, with fasting as a solution if I drift over BMI 25.
A second point, I have a relative aged 80 who has asthma and a lung condition that means there is something wrong with his carbon dioxide balance. He has put on tons of weight, which I am sure is a huge burden on his system. Right now he is in hospital on 24 hour oxygen. The nurses asked his wife if anything happens, do they want them to resuscitate him. So it's serious. His weight is excaberating the condition severely, and he eats because he gets bored and cannot go out. Does anyone think fasting could extend his life / make him a bit stronger? I do, because I know from personal experience what a burden all that extra weight can be. If you do, we could ask the doctors what they think and see if they would agree.
