Response to Pepe re magnesium

Hiya Pepe,

I understand your reservation completely.

In my case, I've had the experience of doing 26 liver flushes, which use Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate) as part of the protocol. Several people experienced a reduction in the effectiveness of the ES in promoting bms, and other related problems, so when I also started to notice this, I did some research and experimented on myself before reporting.

First, I noted the signs of low magnesium in the body. For me, they were shaking hands, cramps, especially in the legs, brain fog, and bad/snappy mood. I also noticed a restlessness that interfered with sleep.

High doses of magnesium in any form will result in rapid evacuation of the bowels. Some forms of magnesium are better absorbed than others; magnesium oxide is one of the less absorbed ones. Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate) is only slightly better, while magnesium citrate is better. There is a wide range of magnesium compounds to choose from, but of course, the best form is the natural forms found in food.

Then I experimented. I tried adding a little ES to my drinking water - 1/4 tsp per 2 liter jar. This helped within 24 hours, but after the next liver flush, I was back to square one. I added Sea Salt (with all it's extra nutrition) to my drinking water (1/4 tsp per 2 liter jar) and this helped too - until the next liver flush. Then I tried adding 500 mg doses of magnesium oxide over a 3-day period before the next liver flush, and following by about 3 days. No problems with low magnesium!

However, you are correct in pointing out that adding it in the diet might work havok with the cleansing of the diet. So in the case of MCers, it would be better to use the detox baths to get extra magnesium into the body through the skin.

In my MC, I could not obtain laxative tea and thought it might be too much for my body anyways, as my bms were frequent to begin with. In my own particular case, my body responded well to this substitute. I checked my pH levels almost daily from Day 7 on (so I can't account for the first 7 days) and my pH was higher than before starting the MC: Around 7.3 for saliva, 7.5 or higher for urine. Sometimes both numbers were the same: Around 7.5 pH. This was consistent. The magnesium oxide worked well for both cases: improving bms (large doses in the evening) and improving electrolyte balance (small 1-per-day doses, with no large dose at night). I was aware that this was a departure from the strict Master-Cleanse and a little concerned about it, but I did not experience any problems. However, that is not to say that other people - especially those not well-experienced in watching for electrolyte signs - might have the same trouble-free experience.

Btw, switching from maple syrup to molasses, which is in the diabetic part of the Master-Cleanse protocol, is a great way to add both more electrolytes and increase bms. It doesn't taste as good as maple syrup, though. In the later stages of my MC, I switched exclusively to molasses and dropped the magnesium oxide, and the molasses seemed to address both the issue of a laxative and maintaining a balanced electrolyte level.

Here is an excellent source of information on magnesium of all compounds. It describes common symptoms of magnesium deficiency and how to correct this deficiency through supplements or diet:

So, to put it in a nutshell, Pepe - I concur. For newbies, stick to the Master-Cleanse protocol. Just consider adding the detox bath if you experience cramps, especially in the legs, bad/snappy/depressed mood, sleep disturbances, and brain fog. And if you do the detox bath, get out and have a cool shower at the first sign of dizziness, and go directly to bed.

Thanks for the heads-up!
