Choosing the right dog

Hi infinitelove

That's a very caring and intelligent question and perhaps one that all potential dog owners need to ask and clarify before jumping in.

I can only share my process when looking for my first dog. I went through loads of web sites and picked out the type of breeds I liked the look of. I then read through their profiles and looked at the type of exercise, grooming needs etc. each breed would need.

I had to consider how much time I had for exercise and whether that would fulfill the dog's personal needs. I also had a BIG consideration that I wanted my dog to come to work with me (at the clinic) and for it to be cute and gorgeous and calm enough that no one would feel threatened by it's size and looks. I also had to take consideration that I am testing others with such as hair samples so I needed a dog that would not moult, therefore have no chance of interfering with my clients hair samples.

Then I made contact with breed clubs and asked them how my needs would suit a certain breed. Doggie people love to talk about their dogs! I had lots of help.

So, it would be wrong for me to say what type of breed you should go for, because there are so many other considerations to take on board.

And you know, the dog will eventually take on your personality. Dogs do that. If you're calm, they will be too. If you get anxious, they will mimic.

When I walk my dog, of course, there are times when I see certain breeds that have been known for violent actions, but I never look at or judge the breed, I just look at the owner, and I already can predict how their dog will act towards me and my dog, just by sensing the owner.

I found this online questionnaire that might help:

A lot of the rescue dogs do have a known history. However, within 6-12 months, irrelevant of the background and with a little training and all the love and attention it needs, you'll find the dog will respond in kind with your energy. So, it's not always a worry about what breed or whether they are calm or not .. they will meet you and be just right. It works out that way.

Having read many of your posts, I would suggest this for you: Just go and see some dogs and ask them (silently), "Are we right for each other? Will we heal each other? Will our partnership be mutually beneficial?" .. and then listen inside. Feel what you feel ... you'll have a knowing when the right dog comes.

Love
Maya
