"The links between antidepressants and violence are well documented

The authors note that "Some regulators, such as the Canadian regulators, have also referred to risks of treatment-induced activation leading to both self-harm and harm to others" and the "United States labels for all antidepressants as of August 2004 note that 'anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity, akathisia (psychomotor restlessness), hypomania, and mania have been reported in adult and pediatric patients being treated with antidepressants for major depressive disorder as well as for other indications, both psychiatric and nonpsychiatric'".

In other words, the link between antidepressants and violence has been known for years by the very people manufacturing, marketing or prescribing the drugs. As the author of the study mentioned above concluded, "The new issues highlighted by these cases need urgent examination jointly by jurists and psychiatrists in all countries where antidepressants are widely used."

That was last year, well before this latest shooting. The warning signs were there, and they've been visible for a long time. Medical authorities can hardly say they are "shocked" by this violent behavior. After all, the same pattern of violence among antidepressant takers has been observed, documented and published in numerous previous cases."

Focus should be on the pharmaceuticals and not the weapons. Anyone with murder on their mind can use anything imaginable to kill someone. There is no real punishment in this country. Countries that do have gun control have some of the severest punishments in the world and it is for that reason, and that alone that their crime rate is so low. These horrible drugs need to be pulled from the market, period! I wonder how many other countries may have banned these drugs or never allowed them in the first place. I can't understand how any parent would allow their child to be on any of these drugs, or how any grown up would consent to taking any of these drugs after all the incidents like this that has happened. Several years ago the thought came to me how that the Lord gave out just so much intelligence and there seems to be none left. People are like sheep, can't think for themselves, don't care to find anything out, just listen to whatever they're told. Thank God there are still some that aren't like the lemmings. Is there anyway we can wake up the rest???????

I am a supporter of the right to bear arms. I think there are a lot more controls necessary on purchasing them. And you can't tell me that a kid brandishing a knife would have taken out 30 people before someone stopped him.

I don't think this kid was what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they were talking about rights to bear arms!

This is a time, Corinthian, that I couldn't agree with you more! If he was indeed diagnosed with Depression then the clinician did not do a thorough job of diagnosing him. He had a long history of flat affect and inability to relate to people socially, which are considered 'negative' symptoms of schizophrenia. His more recent writings and stalking show an deterioration of his state of mind, and it is common that schizophrenia manifests in young adulthood. His previous hospitalization may have resulted from the development of 'positive' symptoms of schizophrenia, namely hallucinations and/or delusions, or at least an increased disorganization of his cognitive functioning. It is possible that the shooting sprees occured during his first psychotic break. Depression can occur along with schizophrenia, but clearly he was more than clinically depressed.
