You are probably best to answer this question, but please, anyone with knowledge, please share.
On another forum I shared that my sister and her husband had bought 50 acres of ranch property in Central Texas and that my husband and I are considering moving out to the country somewhere. We were considering buying out near my sister, but we found out there is an egg farm owned by Sanderson Farms, a poultry company nearly as big as Tyson next door to her.
I told my sister I was hesitant to move near her because of Bird Flu, and she looked at me like I was crazy. I said the Bird Flu is killing all these chickens in Asia and Eastern Europe, and even though it's not in the US yet, there is the possibility that it could reach the US in a couple of years if they don't get it contained. You know how they are having to shut down these poultry farms and burn the places down, etc.
My husband is interested in buying in that area because the geography is what he's looking for and the price is right.
2Tuff, do you have some stats on how many farms in Eastern Europe have been shut down from Bird Flu? What do they actually do? Do you know how large of a region they burn or destroy or quarantine if Bird Flu is suspected? Have you heard of any cases of humans in Asia, etc where they got ill from this flu but weren't in direct contact with the chickens... like they lived on the next farm over? Do you see any danger for my sister's family? Would you be buying property anywhere near an egg farm?

You need to listen less to the controlled media and see reality for what it is not all the myths. If you would like to live at this area then do so because Bird Flu is utter tripe no matter what the TV,Radio,internet,newspapers,magazines and drone friends may say or think. Prove to me any of the birds died of H5n1, you cannot and neither can the pathetic controlled scientific community. They go on and on about pcr and anti-body tests which mean NOTHING except if the bird has anti-bodies then its immune system is working fine and it wasn't this that killed it. Again its down to poor conditions of birds along with Genetically-Modified seed feeding and other chemical muck which as usual the MMPIC cover up with fake diseases or existant diseases.

Wow, this is amazing. From what I have seen, the bird farmers in Malasia, Vietnam, Thailand, etc, where H5N1 has caused problems, can not afford and do not buy Genetically-Modified feed at all. They feed their birds garbage, literally. Most reported H5N1 cases have not come from big poultry farms but from small farms, especially producers of fighting cocks.

While you are correct about the antibody tests, it seems that you may have missed the boat on PCR test.
The PCR test or polymerase chain reaction requires that the actual DNA or RNA in question must be present and this can not happen without an actual infection. It is not an antibody test. It works by finding specific DNA or RNA sequences and reproducing it enough to bring it to detectable levels. Only the specific sequence is reproduced.
This way, very minute amounts of genetic material can be identified, thereby pointing exactly to a very specific organism. To verify the existance of H5N1 as being present, first the antibodies to this specific virus are identified. Once it has been determined by this method that the subject has been exposed to H5N1, then the PCR test is run to determine if live DNA is present. Only if this test produces positive results is it concluded that the subject actually had living H5N1 present.

Hmmm quite an observation! Have you been to these places! I raise layer hens and I can tell you for a fact it doesnt get any cheaper to spend all day gathering enough scraps to feed even thirty birds without layer mash and the egg production is minimal in return! Anyone raisng layer hens would spend all his time to gather enugh scrap to feed any large quantity of birds!
I also find it non beleivable that small farms are responsible for shoddy conditions as its the over stockng of birds that cause the problems!
Seems your imagination is out of line with raising poultry! But then again you have been there!

Yes, I have. Used to raise chickens myself, years ago. Did not have to scrounge though, had plenty of table scraps to augment the worms, etc that they scratched for. Never used layer mash and did not have any shortage of eggs except during moulting.
As far as traveling to S.E. Asia, I have not, but my brother-in-law just came back from 4 years in China, Thailand, Vietnam, etc. So, yes, my info about these areas is second hand but I trust him better than I do the news or anyone else that I do not know personally.

It is amazing how chickens have survived for so long without "layer mash".

No, they were for me and my family, but I am really surprised that you of all people are feeding your chickens such and then selling such contaminated food. Laying feed and mash are loaded with artificial hormones and chemicals.

There is not fear in my Science except for what you try to read into it. The information that I post is reasonable and supported by documentation. I have yet to see any real documentation supporting your claims.
The point is that this is not a debate forum. It is here for the posting of information. When all that you can do is flame, your credibility is absent. Even excluding this, everything that you have said does not refute my points.

This is a reply to # 345,545Ok, Thorn, so you agree with 2tuff's assessment that if there was any problem with the egg producing farms- and these are commercial farms, not Mom & Pops- it would be because they are commercial mass producers with the treatment of the hens and not H5N1?
Since you have been in the industry, do you know of any reason not to settle near one of these farms?

My actual concern is that from what I've heard in the mainstream media is that they burn down the farms (Asia, Eastern Europe) when a chicken dies. I didn't know how far a fire would reach- to the property line of the farm, or are they burning whole regions? I wasn't worried about human infection, and I realized poultry infection in the US is a pretty remote possibility, but I also believe (not factual knowledge) that the USDA or someone similar could get a little crazy in the future and do something that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

MoreThis is a reply to # 345,549If I was to live close to as poultry farm my curioisity would cause me to investigate the conditions of these birds and if it was some filthy mess I would start a community action committeee to bring it up to standards! But I would not fear them!
Beside s if the employees of said farm are not suffering from any disease why would living in the vincinity be a cause! If there is a danger from these birds it is in the conditions they live in and the vaccines and Antibiotics you would consume by eating them! I would urge these places to go organic! Biophobia plays big in a america , thank to the soap operas! Americans are so afraid of nature yet will stew themselves in chemical cleansing products! From bleach to flouride and petrochems! Every womens vanity table smells like a chemical factory with a little bit of flowery scent to attempt to cover up these chemicals! I admit not everyone could afford Genetically-Modified but also bear in mind a lot of the planet is contaminated by GM. Anyway like I say hes given you another route/answer to deaths of these birds which live in dirty conditions, hardly fed and when they are its muck. The ROMANS knew about dirty environments and disease and the TRUE reason for the decline in disease was not vaccines but a better standard of living. The reason for the increase of late is the increase in immigrants still living their old ways and foreigners dirtying up the cities. I know I live in a large city and see it day in and out. Also people coming in with disease then get classed as a statistic.

I agree with you that these test are not ideal but they are a useful tool to prove that a particular DNA or RNA is present. They are specific in that only DNA or RNA sequence that matches the required code will be amplified. Others are rejected.
The real problem is that the amount of viral DNA or RNA is extremely miniscule even when it causes death. There is not enough present to easily prove its existance so that it has to be amplified.
Also, we need to remember that the bird flu does not kill humans. The body literally kills itself trying to stop it.- Re: Hope this sorts some things out! Thorn

Just study a little bit about the killer cells in the body and you will know as much as everyone else. There is plenty of information available on the internet.
Basically, I learned about this in 7th grade health and again in high school biology back in the 1960's. Admittedly, school does not appear to teach as much these days.

This is a reply to # 345,560Yes, it seems that schools today do not offer as extensive of an educational background as they used to. I have a niece that graduated high school in '97. It is amazing how little she knew. She was an 'A' student too.
However, if you want to get beyond the 7th grade level of knowlege, there is still a lot of information available on the internet.

Nothing to do with any antibodies at all. Actually killer cells usually react when antibodies fail. They track down cells that are infected with viri and kill them. It is one of the bodies natural defenses. Unfortunately, H5N1 attacks the cells that line the alveoli in the lungs. When the killer cells attack, these cells die which allows the blood and other bodily fluids to fill the lungs. Any doctor that is not alert might just think that the patient has pneumonia, that is until it is too late.

Sorry, I am not instilling fear. It certainly is not causing me any major concern. If I wanted to instill fear, I would be stressing Marburg. Now, that is something fearful.

Sorry for you there too. I have a great education including 7 years of college studying biology, chemistry, and engineering. The best part is that I learned a lot. What scientific resourses? Scientific resource implies that the information came from carefully organized studies and tests. The sources that you propose did not meet that criteria.

Why did you bring it up then? I am aware that in every crowd, there are people who are more politically motivated than others. That does not invalidate the works of others in the crowd who are not so politically motivated.
The real question is: If killer cells are bunk, why does google list 10,000,000 pages on the topic?
