I thought a would post another update on my self discovery journey into better health.
A quick history: I started my Iodine intake in August 2011. I gradually added to the co supps until I was taking all the necessary supps. Intake started at 5mg and has moved all the way up to 100-150mg.
I have had breakthroughs along this journey. The first time I took Iodine I remember feeling on top of the world - energetic and confident. Almost a new man. That feeling only lasted a day or two.
Other breakthroughs included the addition of borax, turmeric and pink salt.
Now, being a bit naive I thought that Iodine would be the cure all. It wasn't. Improvements included better immunity. But I still felt cold in the extremities, fatigue when waking and poor mood.
Being a personal trainer it dawned on me that I was giving my clients better care than myself.
My nutrition was not up to scratch. My sleep was poor in terms on pattern and quality. I was not following an exercise plan. I was ommiting aerobic exercise in favour of all weight based. I was partying too hard on the weekends - too much alcohol, some recreational drug use which led onto even worse sleep/nutrition. Basically, I was kidding myself.
And now onto my next breakthrough. I had had enough of bring sub-par most of the time - even though I was better still on iodine. It was time to change multiple areas of my life.
So now I am experimenting and supplementing my iodine journey with better lifestyle changes/choices. I am 2 weeks into this experiment - I suspect I have had hormonal imbalances due to my lifestyle.
- no alcohol/RD's
- plenty of protein.
- more organic veg and more variety.
- timed carbohydrate intake around workouts.
- regular sleep pattern, even on weekends: 7-8hrs sleep.
- lots of crucificerous veg
- no processed foods.
- exercise that suits my makeup
- addition of some cardiovascular exercise.
- avoiding BPA's.
These are my initial changes and I feel a lot better already. My GI tract is better, mood is better, energy is better etc.
I think to truly get the benefits of iodine you need to be honest with yourself and change your lifestyle.

This is a reply to # 2,063,190Nice update! I agree 100% with regards to the lifestyle changes... especially diet/alcohol. Funny thing, I believe Iodine has helped with the will power and decreasing chemical dependencies (particularly mine with caffeine/alcohol).
*edit* i say this because I 'weaned' myself off coffee in the first or second week of iodine... it wasn't a conscious effort. but i noticed that i stopped having a craving and didn't make any for like 4 days before i really noticed it. it was that caffeine withdrawal headache that was my first cue, and i realized "ah, haven't had coffee in days!". i will drink it when my husband makes it, here and there, but i was an ADDICT for 10 years i would say. first thing, every morning, was that coffee.
My only "RD" is a natural herb that grows from the earth ;) which I have cut out in the past few months as well. That will power/decreased need for herb/alcohol I think is due not only to Iodine but nutritional deficiencies being addressed.
I need to get back into the consistent exercise regimen, I know that would make a load of difference too (e.g., sweating, flushing lymph system).

This is a reply to # 2,063,196My 9 year heavy binge drinking and alcohol cravings disappeared after being on Iodine and co-supps. It's nothing short of a miracle for me. When I do an update post, this will surely be included. It's so cool that its happened to someone else too. :)

This is a reply to # 2,063,190Congratulations on your progress. If you have digestion woes I would suggest you go on a low carb Paleo diet (no grains, no dairy, no starchy veggies). It has worked wonders for myself and many others. This diet is also known as the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD). It is great that you are looking to improve your diet/lifestyle to make yourself the best you can be.
One thing I fear about this forum is that folks look to Iodine supplementation as an "Easy button". Just take a few pills each day and it will compensate for an indifferent (or bad) diet, excess alcohol consumption, no exercise, smoking, etc. Sadly, life doesn't work this way. Serious attention to diet/lifestyle should be the *primary* focus. Yes, it is hard work. But most will tell you it is WELL worth the effort. Stuff like Iodine supplementation is complementary. In fact I would not encourage Iodine supplementation up front or else it would be viewed as a crutch. I'd push HARD on the diet/lifestyle stuff and then suggest iodine supplementation once stability is reached. (Of course for those with cancer or some other urgent health matter need to do it all at once, which I'd imagine would be very hard on the body.)
Yes, iodine can work wonders. But for myself it pales in comparison to what diet has done for me. Quite simply, I am a completely overhauled individual thanks to a careful, nutritious diet.

Diet is important, but even on the best of diets I became hypo T. Problem today is that we dont get enough from food, so a combination of a good diet and some supplement like iodine, and you are good to go.
Seeing a bigger picture of oneself that South Londoner have done all from the start, thats a big hands up IMO!

This is a reply to # 2,063,279Of course even the best of diets don't offer 100% complete nutrition. I suggest folks read Perfect Health Diet (Jaminet), available on amazon.com:

He goes through a list of supplements folks should take even if they are consuming a healthy diet. These supplements include (among others): vitamin C, magnesium, vitamin K2, selenium and iodine. So yes, Iodine and its companion supplements are good for everyone.
Having said this, in my opinion radically changing one's diet brings upon turbulence. Turning away from food addictions is murder, dramatically changing one's macro nutrient levels (protein, fat, carbs) can be tough in the beginning. For example, going low carb may cause a Candida die off. That is why I think it is best to first get one's dietary house in order before spending too much attention on toxins (fluorine, bromine, mercury...). Once your body stabilizes then work to clean up the messes that diet alone cannot touch.

After vegetarianism I went Weston Price`ic, not far from the diet I was raised on. For me, close to the artic circle it is a good choice, I believe. All based on cravings though, as I found this to be the best way to cover the needs.
In the summer, or if on my travels to Asia; the cravings change completely; more greens, less meat.
Thats also something to consider.

Yes, Lazza, that has been our fear as well, from very early on. Iodine will not work, in a body that is not working...

This is a reply to # 2,063,407I've been taking Iodine for ten days and my alcohol cravings are drastically reduced. I'm a very heavy drinker. I'm scared to stop completely, but I suspect the Iodine might prevent withdrawal all together.
