I'm an old hand at long fasts having done over a dozen 40 day Master Cleanses over the years. I don't look for specific things. Generally things happens so gradually that you might not notice something till months down the road. My attitude is "Que sera, sera" (what will be will be) and just knowing that I'm doing a world of good. Having said all that what I will say that one of the main if not the main attraction of long fast is the introspection it afford you. The inner quiet, self reflection, the empowerment, the feeling of lightness. The rest are just pluses. Trying to "figure it out" is a total waste of time. Tain't gonna happen ;+D It's a waste of time cause it'll be what it'll be. Damn the torpedoes , Full speed ahead!! ;+D
Another important mindset to any form of fasting is that fasting is not "IT". It is just the "clean up phase" and the" real" benefits come >>after<< in what you put back in the system. Balanced nutrient dense nutrition and regular exercise is and will always be the main focus. Fasting is the "EASY" part ;+D
What I'm doing is called juice "Feasting" the main difference is that you do greater amounts of juice (3 to 5 liters a day) and "some" supplements are a allowed. here's a link with comprehensive info on Juice Feasting:

I know I've posted links somewhere on MSM but I don't know where at this moment. It's main benefit when juice feasting it that it makes our cell more permeable to be able to absorb more nutrient. There are a myriad of other benefits. The most commonly known are joint and connective tissue benefits but there are still many more benefits. Just google "MSM benefits".
I use hemp oil cause it contains the perfect balance of omega 3 & 6 the body uses and it's the least expensive to boot. There are "blends" that you can find in most healthfood stores that claim to achieve this balance but they are expensive. The other option is Flax seed oil which doesn't have the perfect balance but it leans to the EFA that we generally lack the most. Most likely if you can find Flax or the blends they will have the hemp oil also.
Once you are past the 3 weeks it's a cakewalk. From you questions I sense "fear" and amigo that takes you nowhere. It really is not that big of a deal. The biggest obstacle for me is keeping from getting bored with the routine. but so far I keep finding ways change recipes add some things etc. I dunno how much weight I've lost but it is not as much as I thought I would loose. People that really need to loose lots of weight often loose as much as I've lost in 88 days in a month or less. When you fast the energy goes to heal what you need the most and very often it is not weight loss. As I said to you before that you are not going to think your way into this. This is not an "intellectual" exercise it's about the "doing of" and for that you need to get over the fear part.
I felt that "maybe" there might have been a little muscle loss but I can't really tell cause it could just be fat around the muscle in anycase between my boredom needing a change up and my intuition pointed me to add Spirulina which by weight it has the highest protein content of anything else out there. I also added bee pollen which besides a crapload of nutrients also contains protein. Bout 2 weeks ago I also added Maca another souce of protein and a crapload of nutrients.It is an adaptogenic nutrient. Last but not least Lugols.
You are not going to intelletualize yourself into this. Just do it!!
