You're seeing the results of what you've been drinking, eating, and breathing your whole life. When I started iodine, I got a goiter. That didn't mean I didn't need the iodine, but it meant that I had multiple systems to clean up. Go wheat free and pay attention to your GI test results to see how to help heal your colon. Even though you had no amalgams, the fluoride drugs and the air in NYC -- I've breathed in that black stuff, and though I love NYC, the air is nasty. Even the low amount of iodine you've been taking is enough to stir up the crud in your body, and all heck breaks lose. Also, you can't put the stopper back in the bottle, much as you might want to at this point. I was alarmed at my start, and there were no easy answers. Read, read, read. Try not to panic :) Little threads will start popping up, and you'll follow them, and a small bit will feel better. You build on that, day after day. This is the new partnership with your body, where it's shouting and you're starting to pay attention.

I've had a goiter grow three times. No nodules, just uniform swelling on both sides. The first time was probably 20 years ago after taking 30 mg iodine liquid from kelp for a few weeks. I was seeing a doctor regularly at that time because I was on isoniazid treatment for a tb-test conversion. The assumption was I'd been exposed to tb at one time; I think the treatment was for 9 months. I was just starting to take care of myself. The doctor felt the swelling and it put her on alert. I felt guilty about the iodine and stopped it. The goiter went away.
But over the years I had developed a very bad case of fibrocystic breasts. I'd read from Dr. Jonathan Wright that Lugol's could fix this. I didn't have access to Lugol's, and that's why I'd been trying the iodine from kelp. I kept getting worse and worse, and the doctor would only recommend draining the cysts if the pain got too bad. She sent me for a breast sonography, and the radiologist reading the film was very concerned. He had the face of someone looking at a woman who would be back with breast cancer. He spoke with his tech outside the room I was in, and said I needed either thyroid or iodine.
I never saw my doctor again. I redoubled my efforts at self-treatment. I found Iodoral and Iosol on my own, but had vicious headaches that made me think iodine was toxic for me. Then four years ago I found this forum, and learned about detox. I was scared to try iodine again, wondering about the goiter still, but I was scared not to. I started in low and slow on Iodoral and built up. By this time I was additionally taking iodine to offset cardiovascular disease I was afraid of because of high Lipoprotein(a). I began to push the envelope on how much iodine to take. One year after starting, I briefly hit my upper limit of Iodoral 300 mg plus SSKI 600 mg, sort of like achieving a mountain peak. That's when the goiter came back, during this time of super-high dosing.
It continued growing even as I backed off how much iodine I was taking. My thyroid activity, which had continually been low but slightly rejuvenated taking iodine, had never normalized, and I reluctantly concluded I'd have to take thyroid hormone. After 2 years, about the time I reached 5 grains of generic Armour, the goiter was gone. Sadly, I was taking oregano oil for candida. The oregano oil depleted my ferritin levels, which sabotaged my ability to tolerate Armour, and the goiter came back a third time. This time I knew why, that my TSH had risen, and as soon as my ferritin level allowed me to take 3 grains of Armour, the goiter was gone before having become noticeable to anybody but me. I am, today, goiter free :)
yes, yes, and yes :) Generic Armour, that is. Stop the Thyroid Madness recommends a minimum ferritin of 70-90, but I appear to need 140 to be fully functioning. After achieving 140 last year and feeling fabulous, I took oregano oil as part of my candida fight, and found out too late that it can cause iron to disappear. When I finally suspected it this Feb after my energy tanked once again, my ferritin was back down to 56. GRRRRRRRRR It takes SO long to build up ferritin. Luckily I tolerate cheapy ferrous sulfate very well (though hubby needs iron bisglycinate). I have a ferritin about 110 right now, and am tolerating 3-1/2 grains. Only 30 points to go, and I'm really getting impatient. I'm expecting to level off at about 5 grains of thyroid extract.
