I'm just taking glycine for now and it seems to help but wears off after a few hours and so I wake up again... at least I think that's what's happening!
You can take another dose when you wake up.
Yes, my adrenal fatigue has improved in leaps and bounds. I'm still low on energy and get foggy when I'm tired
That sounds more like a problem with hypothyroidism. Have you checked your basal body temperature? I have instructions on my Thyroid Tonic informational page:

I'm new to this forum but after scanning old posts I see that this might be a place where I can get some advice. I've been on Dr Lam's protocol for adrenal fatigue for about six months already, I'm 25/f and have been up and down since with the only significant improvement being that my mood swings, anxiety and depression are almost completely gone (which I am very, very grateful for). My symptoms of AF were moodiness, depression and anxiety and bursts of rage (I felt like my mind was out of control), weight gain, VERY bad dizziness in the summer, low blood pressure (and have had this all my life), incredible insomnia (my no.1 complaint), heart palpitations when trying to relax at times, feeling drained after a workout, and more recently after I started the protocol, weird digestion problems - cramps, bloating, diarrhea, which I thought I might want to take care of with a parasite cleanse as I had eaten some questionable things.
First thing is that you have multiple things going on. These are NOT all related symptoms.
Anxiety may or may not be related to the adrenals. The most common cause of anxiety/panic attacks is a lactate build up, which is not adrenal related. The second most common cause is excess epinephrine and a lack of acetylcholine. This is an adrenal issue since the adrenals are over reacting to allergens or stress by secreting excess epinephrine in response.
Depression has numerous causes including low dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, acetylcholine, prostaglandins, cholesterol, adrenals or thyroid or high prolactin levels Other causes include nutritional deficiencies, medications, drug abuse, etc.
The moodiness and burst of rage sound more like hormonal issues, in particular high androgen levels (progesterone or testosterone).
Weight gain also has numerous causes including hormones, low thyroid, diabetes, PCOS, overeating, hypothalamic dysfunction, etc.
Dizziness, especially upon standing can be from adrenal dysfunction leading to drops in the blood pressure. Although inner ear disturbances or even misalignment of the neck can also cause this.
Low blood pressure is most often from adrenal dysfunction, but can also be from medications, dehydration, etc.
Insomnia can be hormones, low thyroid, overuse of stimulants or simply an active mind.
Here is an old post I did explaining heart palpitations:
http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=1509535#i
Feeling drained after a workout is most likely adrenals.
Cramps, bloating and diarrhea can be a few things. If suddenly occurring then it is likely something you ate. If it is an ongoing problem then it sounds more like a lack of intestinal flora. It can also be from "cleansing herbs" such as psyllium, cascara sagrada, senna, rhubarb root, etc.
One thing that it rather interesting is that some of your symptoms sound like they are due to excess epinephrine secretion, but epinephrine also raises blood pressure and yours is low. This is another reason I do not believe that all your symptoms are due to adrenal dysfunction.
So throughout this whole protocol my sleep has been dipping into what I call "rock bottom" - 2-4 hours of sleep a night. Usually I fall asleep exhausted only to wake up a couple of hours later and I never get back to sleep when I am at rock bottom. At best, these days, I get 8 hours of sleep. I feel like I need 10 or more (oh, to get back to those days when I couldn't pry myself from the bed and could sleep all day - which DID happen right before the insomnia. NB I have never had insomnia before in my life before the last 6 months.)
Is your mind racing? Is your heart racing and pounding? Or are you simply wide awake?
Lam's protocol hasn't visibly helped me but of course they claim it's because I went ahead and did a humaworm parasite cleanse in February without their approval, which toxified my system further (and they may be right here?)
Detoxifying the system should not make any difference.
In fact I felt so good at the beginning of that cleanse, and SO bad after that I thought i had to detox my system and did a liver flush (hadn't read your info on flushes yet).
The so called "liver flushes" using olive oil, lemon juice and magnesium do not work. I have some posts on here about it as well as I did a series of videos explaining why:
http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=1679049#i
I slept great the night of the flush but unfortunately back to rock bottom sleep since. Am now considering taking humaworm herbs for a kidney and liver flush as humaworm advised me to.
I don't know what is in these but you may want to run the ingredients by me first since some herbs can cause problems. For example, many kidney formulas include uva ursi, which can lock up other herbs combined with it rendering them useless to the body. Uva ursi also should not be taken for more than 4 days in a row without a break since it can irritate the kidneys. Uva ursi also lowers blood sugar, which can be an issue for people with adrenal dysfunction since chronic hypoglycemia results from adrenal dysfunction:

I thought that my liver might be sluggish and that is why sleeping pills keep me up all night AND the next night these days. Also in Chinese medicine the gallbladder is connected to sleep.
Most sleeping pills are notorious for causing hallucinations, sleep walking, sleep eating, sleep sex, etc. I would not recommend them for sleeping. Here is more on these:
http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=1659664#i
I apologize for the long post. I am seeking alternative advice as Lam tells me one thing, humaworm tells me another, and the only person I really trust is my acupuncturist but in specialized matters like this I think she and I don't know that much about it.
I read what you said HV about the synthetic vitamins that Lam prescribes and I feel like it's only too true. I've been waiting to feel a positive effect from them but nothing. They say that recovery is gradual but of course I'm desperate and can't tell, no matter what i do, if it has helped or not. I am clueless as to what I should even do next... take the herbs for my liver? Abandon that plan? Focus on my adrenals?
Cleansing the liver will help with balancing your hormones. But again the so-called "liver flushes" are bogus. The most effective way to really cleanse your liver is with digestive bitters. Actually I have a write up on balancing the hormones that will give you a number of suggestions:
http://mountainmistbotanicals.com/info/Hormone_Balance.htm
Working on your adrenals will help with some of your other symptoms. Nettle leaf and ashwagandha would be especially helpful. Both support the adrenals and nettle leaf will also help lower lactate levels to help counter the anxiety. Ashwagandha supports the adrenals and thyroid as well as raises gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) levels, again helping to counter anxiety. Glycine and anti-anxiety drugs such as Valium also work by increasing GABA levels. But ashwagandha and glycine are much safer and more beneficial than pharmaceutical anti-anxiety drugs.
I also recommend focusing more on natural vitamin C and pantothenic (B5) sources instead of the synthetics, as well as other adaptogens, such as licorice root, schisandra berry, astragalus, etc. More on building the adrenals:
http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=1527351#i
I am looking into glycine as you wrote before and see if it will help.
All the other aspects of Lam's protocol, which in fact is quite broad (breathing, yoga, stress reduction, small snack before bed, cut out all sugar and simple carbs) seem great to me. Just the supplements are questionable.
I'm so confused about what to take care of first, detoxing my body (if it in fact needs detoxing) or my adrenals, as apparently my adrenals won't get better if my system is toxic, but if I detox my system it will hurt my adrenals!
The adrenals are adversely affected more by stress, stimulants and steroids than they are by toxins. And you can still detoxify your system even with weak adrenals. Starting out slowly with digestive bitters will cleanse your system as well as increasing your water intake. Increasing your fiber intake also helps with detoxifying the system, especially hormone metabolites.
Same goes for sleep - I won't sleep until my adrenals are better but until I sleep, how can my adrenals heal?
Again there are various reasons for insomnia. It may or may not be adrenal related. But stressing over it is not going to help your adrenals.
My 14 year old son has been diagnosed with SVT. I am wondering if the suggestions that you make in the post you linked above for heart palpitations would apply to this issue. If not, could you suggest alternative approaches, please? I am hoping to avoid medications or invasive procedures to correct this problem, which are the choices (along with doing nothing) that have been suggested by the cardiologist.
If you can find it I would recommend the cactus grandiflorus (night blooming cereus), which is a weak cardiac glycoside source. It will slow the heart, increase contractile force and increase circulation. Generally it is only available in a tincture form, but you can easily get your own in the future to make your own tincture. Night blooming cereus is the base cactus they use on those decorative grafted cacti you see in the stores.
Wow, thank you Hv, you are wonderfully thorough and so far are the only person I've spoken to who weighs options and possibilities instead of assuring me that it IS parasites, or that it IS the adrenals. I feel hopeful now that I can work this out WITHOUT synthetics.
I'm guessing that the hormones and menstruation problem I should leave until later, see if it resolves itself once the adrenal and other issues are addressed?
Actually there are simple things you can still do now to help with your hormones such as more phytoestrogens, B vitamins and bitters in the diet. Here is a link to my write up on balancing the hormones:
http://mountainmistbotanicals.com/info/Hormone_Balance.htm
The thing is I was regular but just skipping every other period. I felt like maybe one of my ovaries just wasn't ovulating. I tend to get like clockwork when on certain chinese herbs (bupleurum spleen restoring pill, I think, will have to check with my acupuncturist). lately, we've been relaxing the herbs to see how it does on its own, and I am now menstruating every 5 weeks, so still stretched out, but better.
There are a number of things that affect your menstruation such as age, ovarian cysts, lack of body fat, etc.
But one thing that I just realized that's very interesting given your info about androgen dominance. I read that estrogen dominant women can have a low sex drive.
This is a persistent myth that has really been repeated over and over especially by those promoting progesterone creams.
Actually estrogen increases sex drive, desire for touching and receptiveness in women. This is why the name estrogen is derived from the word "estrus" meaning sexua| excitement/receptivity. It also helps to maintain vaginal tone, promotes vaginal lubrication and increases oxytocin, which is the peptide responsible for orgasms and one involved in "pair bonding". On a more subtle level estrogen increases pheromones that make women smell more pleasant to men.
On the other end of the spectrum is progesterone, which suppresses the sex drive. This is why progesterone is used to "chemically castrate" men and why the other name for the herb vitex is "chaste tree berry". Vitex increases progesterone, which if too high will kill the sex drive. Progesterone also increases aggression, weight, acne and depression by increasing monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity while decreasing oxytocin, touch sensitivity and sensitivity of the genitals decreasing sexua| pleasure and the ability to reach orgasm. Progesterone also suppresses LHRH actions further suppressing sex drive. On the more subtle level the actions of progesterone are also the opposite of estrogen making women actually smell unpleasant to men on a subconscious level.
By the way, progesterone can also screw with menstruation.
But there is so much more to sex drive then simply estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels. Other things such as dopamine, serotonin, vasopressin, prolactin, etc. also play roles.
I have a very high sex drive and have been this way for as long as I can remember. I just remember thinking it was strange that I had the opposite symptom. Is this a symptom of androgen dominance? (not sure if it can be classified as a problem or a symptom at all but might be important information?)
Testosterone is also an androgen and it promotes sex drive in both men and women as well as aggression. But it also has different effects than estrogen when it comes to sex drive. Both estrogen and testosterone promote sex drive. Where the difference lies is that estrogen also increases the desire for touch, cuddling, etc. Testosterone is the opposite. Testosterone promotes the desire for sex then leave and don't let the door hit you on the backside as you leave type behavior. This is why people with high testosterone levels tend to masturbate frequently. They want the sexua| release without any real commitment.
To answer your questions, when I wake up these days in the middle of the night - these days meaning, the last couple of weeks - I have felt heart palpitations. My mind may or may not be racing. But the heart palpitations are quite obvious.
If this were from excess epinephrine your heart would also feel like it was racing and pounding. If this is not the case then it sounds like your heart is not getting enough oxygen as you sleep. Since it is only occurring when you sleep I would suspect sleep apnea.
Before that, a month or so ago when I was feeling marginally better than I am now, I would wake up and would primarily feel a mind racing problem, which would start a minute or two after waking up because I would worry myself awake (what if I don't get back to sleep? etc) and then the palpitations would begin as a result.
Has your partner ever said anything about you stopping breathing when you are asleep for short periods of time?
And of course, at times when my body felt better (a couple of months ago), sometimes I would wake up at 5 or 7AM and simply be...awake. I wouldn't feel bad, just awake. Of course later in the day I would feel like death from lack of sleep.
I have the same problem. I tend to deep sleep for the first few hours then lightly sleep after that. If anything wakes me up at that point I have a hard time going back to sleep. But that is usually because my mind gets going at that point.
Here are the ingredients for the kidney herbs:
Marshmallow Root, Pau D' Arco, Burdock, Elecampane, Fennel & Ginger
This formula is to be taken as follows: 2 caps in the morning and 2 caps 8 -12 hours later for 15 days.
Those herbs are fine.
And liver herbs:
Milk thistle, gentain, burdock, barberry, Pau d'arco, cayenne, and again 2 caps twice a day for 2 weeks.
The only bad herb in this formula is the barberry, which is a berberine source. Berberine herbs include goldenseal, barberry, Oregon grape root and coptis (goldthread). Berberine is not for long term use since it kills the intestinal flora. It can also damage the intestinal lining and raise the blood pressure if used for more than 2 weeks. And it lowers blood sugar, which can be an issue for hypoglycemics.
Also here is a formula that humaworm wanted me to take while i was in between parasite cleanses:
Garlic, onion, sage, thyme, cinnamon, clove, ginger. Which can be gotten from food, clearly.
These are fine.
I haven't started any of these yet, thought better to wait for advice.
But I agree about cleansing the liver gently. By the way, after the parasite cleanse I started taking essiac tea to help my body recover. I'm still taking it about 4 weeks later. 4-6 ounces a day. Is this ok, not ok, doesn't matter? I think it might support the liver as it is bitter, etc?
This is another formula that really should not be used long term. The formula contains rhubarb root, which is a source of stimulant laxative anthraquinones. Used for more than a few weeks these herbs can cause a laxative dependence. Other sources of stimulant laxative anthraquinones include senna, cascara sagrada and aloes.
Thank you so much. Ashwagandha is what I will try next especially because it is adrenal related. I have ordered a bunch of orgnic amla powder, bee pollen, etc, and am looking forward to starting an all natural program (that won't break my bank either)!
One last thing - in terms of my low blood pressure I thought this was also a symptom of adrenal fatigue?
Yes, the adrenals regulate the blood pressure in part through the release of epinephrine and also due to its effect on maintaining water balance in the body. Although there can be other reasons as well such as medications and some supplements, dehydration, hypothyroidism or excessive athletic activity, etc.
Is it linked to hypoglycemia?
No. But here is more on hypoglycemia:
http://curezone.org/forums/fm.asp?i=1664281#i
Or salt intake? I've started taking celtic sea salt in water in the mornings.
Salt balance does affect blood pressure. But salt balance is regulated primarily through the adrenals.
Found a way to describe the way I have been feeling, on and off, the past three days, since I stopped the Dr Lam supplements.
Lightheaded but heavy footed. I got that feeling on the way back home today. I feel light-headed and slightly dizzy with a distinct feeling of being weighed down in my feet. As if I could benefit from hanging upside down for a while (and I think I just might lie down and prop my feet up after I'm done typing). I haven't felt that way since starting the Lam program, and I guess now I can attribute the credit to them for helping me out of that feeling. As if I'm about to faint.
Does anyone know what this is, why it happens, and what I can do about it?
It sounds like your blood pressure is bottoming out. Make sure you stay hydrated, which will help a lot. Adding trace element salts or seaweeds to your diet should also help. And of course the stuff I posted before on strengthening the adrenals.
By the way I'm pretty sure I'm anaemic or at least I was when I was a teenager and last time I checked, the inside of my lower eyelids is a pale pinkish-orange. I haven't taken my whole foods iron supplement for a while because i wasn't sure if I should be - although I don't know of any reason why I shouldn't especially if I need it - but I think I'll take one now.
Plant based irons are not absorbed as well, which means you are less likely to overdo it. And if you are anemic and are going to supplement iron remember that calcium , tannins and oxalates ( also found in the Essiac you are taking) block iron absorption. Vitamin C enhances the absorption.
