Hi everybody. I'm another one who feels CZ has about as many forums as is necessary for information overload, near explosion.
Over the years, I have seen people passionately request forums they feel are essential because similar existing ones do not cover their desired topics. Many of those forums were created by Dushan, only to get a few posts and then go flat and unused. The number of forums presently is so enormous, that it makes it difficult for someone relatively new to find their way around. The feeling of community (with all the ups and downs which that implies), has been lost.
On another note, I find it baffling that Spud feels that the political forum is overrun with US politics and of the right-wing persuasion. First of all, as Ryan noted, just a few years ago it was a rabid anti-Bush hub, and no one flinched. Yes, the pendulum does indeed swing...So?
Secondly, no one would love to see the experiences and opinions from people around the world posted more than me, however, it must be noted that CZ is available anywhere in the world were people have access to the internet. There are even forums in a wide number of different languages other than English which are not restricted to health or social content, in other words; anything goes. These forums are largely unused, and people from around the world are just not posting. No one is preventing them from doing it, and in case anyone brings up the argument that it is the US political material that is keeping them out, I'd like to remind them that they could easily post anywhere else on the site they like, but haven't.
Americans are by an overwhelmingly, disproportionate number, the people most using a website which began in Norway. If anyone anywhere on the globe wishes to post whatever on CZ, nothing is done to obstruct that process.
This is a situation which has occured many times on CZ, ever since Dushan began to add forums by request. The outcome has pretty much always been the same, and I suspect will continue to follow the same pattern. Ultimately though, it's Dushan who calls the shots on his website.
Well Spudly, a World Affairs Discussion forum certainly should include way more than just American politics, and if used, it might make for very interesting reading. My point was, that through the years I have seen, and it was documented somewhere on this site, that although the website can be seen all over the world, for some reason, and I assume language has a lot to do with it, mostly US people post in it by an overwhelming majority. Even Canadians are a small minority here as opposed to their neighbors to the south when it comes to CZ. There's been some prominent Aussies (ahem...), but never large numbers.
In conclusion, my personal opinion is that it is not the nature of the posting itself that is keeping a larger, global audience from posting. As I stated before, the political climate within the debate forum changes with the tide, and I suspect that as soon as there is a next US elections it will change again.
On another note, the nature of debate is to challenge opposing views, and given human nature, it can become very heated and ugly, and that truly is a global occurrence!
I think there aren't many different kinds of discussions simply because people do not post for whatever mysterious reason. I believe the language barrier is probably the main reason, but that does not explain why so few people from the many former English colonies do not make an appearance.
Ultimately, it's up to Webbie. Although I still feel there are now far too many forums, I agree that a World Discussion forum might be an interesting experiment. If it works, then the situation would be a digression from previous history. Good luck.
Yes! I have five of these little guys and I adore them. A Malaysian friend of mine who frequently travels to Australia, tells me how you can see them there flying all around. Oh how I would love to see that. I spend hours when I have a chance looking at videos of parrots on YouTube. Lucky you living in a land where they are so abundant. Cats used to be my favorite animals and I still love them (you wouldn't know that by my name, lol) but now parrots have stolen my heart. :o)
You have given some excellent ideas for revamping the site. One thing I'm wholeheartedly in favor of would be to have a more attractive, welcoming and explanatory home page. However, for some of the things you are suggesting, such as the speaker of the week, etc., I'm afraid that would require an ongoing commitment to updating the information. Something similar was initiated years ago, I think it was called Curezone Highlights or something, been so long I can't remember, but only two people were actually featured, Wrenn and Janaki, neither of them still around, and then the project was was dropped. Likewise, several other things have started but discontinued or aborted soon after inception.
I don't know how much time Dushan is able to spend on the site these days, but perhaps he is doing as much as he can by just keeping it running. As you aptly put it, Laissez faire is indeed the operative phrase with him, so it may mean that we have to learn to accept things as they are and not as they could be.
For all that many of us feel that could be improved upon, the site continues to grow and has enormous traffic. Perhaps the webmaster concentrates on these facts and the number of its hits and is satisfied with that. Or not.
