Sorry about the off-topic post, but this is a smart group and thought you guys might have some ideas.
My husband fractured his arm/wrist on a hike a few weeks ago, it's a compression type fracture with a little triangular piece of the ulna at the wrist that was displaced maybe 2 millimeters. Caught himself with his right arm (his dominant arm/hand) coming down a slope when he slipped.
The docs he saw out in Seattle just casted him, didn't think he needed surgery, but he was advised to follow up ASAP with an orthopedic surgeon here. Which he did, and that guy sent him to a hand specialist who found a second fracture on a CAT scan (he's had THREE CAT scans on that arm, now!). They said he couldn't leave it like that, needed surgery, they were going to put one if not two plates in there, then take one out a few months later, and if he needed the second plate, that could be removed a year later. So basically, 2-3 invasive procedures.
He does therapeutic bodywork, so he needs good, full use of his arms and hands, but because he's into natural health and non-invasive methods whenever possible, he wants to try healing this without surgery and canceled his procedure. He's been doing comfrey poultices,
Epsom Salt soaks because there's some swelling, working with it manually (he's been taking a 2 part cast off and on), essential oils, and he might be doing some accupuncture on it himself. Taking some bone supplements, a Standard Process formula and I think a few herbs. His overall health is pretty good.
He tried to get accupuncture today by a highly regarded local accupuncturist who used to be a "bone doctor" in China, but she wouldn't touch him and said he needed surgery! She pointed out how one of the bones in his arm is actually a little bit rotated from the injury. He just told me he was going to take a nap and then try to adjust the rotation himself when he wakes up!
So far he's still planning on electing no surgery - he's already waited far too long if he was going to do it, but I think we both feel at this point like it's a bit of a crap shoot - in the sense that he could have long term complications with or without the surgery. Seems like it's a risk either way. I mean, it'll heal without surgery, but if it heals wonky and he has pain and poor mobility, I don't know what we'll do because we are really screwed if he can't work. Of course he could have similar complications or worse from surgery if in fact it's not the proper fix, or something goes wrong, if scar tissue and inflammation limit mobility...so you can see the dilemma.
If anyone has any suggestions on other methods he might try, products to use, or a good place to pose this sort of question besides the
Iodine forum, I'm all ears!
thanks a bunch.
