Hi, I'm a 35 year old female and have had the mirena for 2 and 1/2 years now. I have severe cysts that form on my ovaries every other month or so and cause severe back pain. I also have elevated AST or ALT in my liver and liver issues. I NEVER HAD THESE PROBLEMS BEFORE MIRENA. I am strongly considering getting this thing taken out but my obgyn keeps telling me that the progestin in it should be helping my cysts and probably didn't cause them and the liver issue is completely separate. Please help, I have type two diabetes and I'm in pain all the time, also have increased sensitivity to light and severe headache and migraine. Please tell me if you suffer the same things and after taking mirena out did it get better/or worse? I'm really scared! Thanks!

your obgyn is not very bright. Mirena is documented to cause cysts and it is used with caution in diabetics. back pain and headaches are very common, and by the time I got it out I couldn't be outside even on the foggiest day without sunglasses, and I couldn't drive at night at all. go to the mirena website and look up "safety with Mirena", its all there (except liver problems). Go to "the truth in medicine forum" if you have questions about how hormones affect your liver and how you can clear them.
God, these doc's really tick me off. I havent posted on here for a long time, but your message really hit a nerve.
search on this forum for any one of your symptoms and you will find PLENTY of info. Best of luck to you!

This is a reply to # 1,688,884hi, I am 39 and your post rang true for me too. I had the mirena in for 10 months and during this time i developed a large cyst on one of my ovaries. I am having it re-scanned this Thurdsay. I am certain the mirena (or hormone flux associated with it) caused this. I also had my gall bladder removed in Feb of this year and I'm not entirely convinced this was a coincidence either. I'm relatively healthy - although been plagued with hormone issues my whole life. at certain times of the month, it feels like my liver is being cooked too.
oh, and the pains in my back are awful...... I'm approaching the 6 month post removal mark and although not fully recovered yet, things are definitely better than when I had the thing in.
Not sure about the diabetes...sorry...but I do know that mirena causes a lot of problems with blood Sugar so that's not going to help your situation much.

This is a reply to # 1,689,186I am so glad I started doing research. Since I've had the mirena put in I feel like a PTSD ON STEROIDS psycho! My headaches are horrible, bloating, weight gain, feverish and my skin is so damn Itchy I can't take it! I have even started to panic in public, and I can't seem to focus on anything to save my life! I'm tired, yet I can't sleep and my hands are shaky now:( what in the heck is going on? I have 6 children and decided to try this thing!! HELL NO! Never again!!! I even, for the first time ever, tried to commit suicide!!:( I've never been an anxious or depressed person
And I always had energy and was the life of everything... But now I don't wanna get out of bed, and my psychotic outbursts of anger scares me:( what can I do? I'm just going to take the darn thing out! Thank you so much for your posts! Has anyone experienced any of these symptoms this bad? Or am I really going crazy? I feel so bad for my boyfriend:( he's put up with this crazy version of me too?!!:( help? Does anyone have advice?Advertisement

This is a reply to # 1,688,884I have been using mirena for over a year now, and my AST (SGOT) and ALT (SGPT) are higher than normal which got my regular doctor concerned. Not only that, my cbc is also high and my doctor is watching my cholesterol and blood sugar! Prior to using Mirena, all my blood tests were normal. So, I am seriously thinking of removing Mirena ASAP. My diet is clean, I am not taking any medication, and definitely not drinking.
Did you have your Mirena remove? How is your liver tests after it was removed? Thanks for sharing your Mirena experience.- Re: Please help me...Mirena and live... jnams0630

I am having the same issues. I have had Mirena for a year and just got my lab results back. My AST and ALT were extremely high. I am going to discuss this next week with my dr. From what I have researched this seems to be somewhat common. Not sure if you ended up getting yours taken out. If so please let me know how your lab results were! Thank you!
