I completed a 19 day fast recently and lost about 17 pounds.
Everything was going fine the first day I broke the fast, besides weakness. I just had carrot juice.
The second day I was experiencing weird tongue tingling with all juice/food that continued through the fourth day. On the second day I had carrot juice, half an apple, a few berries, and cherry tomatoes. They tasted like heaven.
The third day I continued with berries and tomatoes, had a whole apple, and then went out for dinner at a raw vegan restaurant. I ordered a "live" (raw) dish which consisted of two kale wraps filled with a raw falafel and with a side of cashew butter. I had two bites of this. I also ordered a peach/raw agave/coconut milk drink and drank about a quarter of it or less (it was 16oz).
The fourth day, I had berries, tomatoes, and apple again and four more bites of my live wrap and finished the coconut drink. I also had a tiny nibble of a healthy apple crisp I made for someone out of apples, stevia, cinnamon, dates and walnuts. I also had three pieces of cucumber soaked in stevia and rice vinegar.
The fifth day (yesterday) is when I really screwed up. I started out well, with berries again as well as some cucumber. I made baked salmon and shiitake mushrooms with a miso ginger sauce and toasted some yam slices with peanut oil, salt and cinnamon in the oven. I had a little bit of each as well as a tiny salad of romaine, chard and sorrel with a small bit of homemade tahini miso dressing. That night, I was talked into going out for a glass of white wine. When I came home, I finished my live wrap, had a bit more of the miso salmon, a few more yam chips, a couple of berries and two pieces of tahini cauliflower. It was maybe half the size of an "average" person's meal, but I felt absolutely stuffed.
This morning I woke up and decided for some reason now that I'd had that variety it was ok. I decided to record what I ate today to see how many calories were in it. Throughout the day I had 2 strawberries, 2 blackberries, 10 blueberries, half a slice of gluten free toast with a tablespoon of hummus, a small bit of bell pepper scrambled eggs with salsa (all homemade, no butter or anything at least), some carrots cooked with thyme, balsamic vinegar and peanut oil (about 8 small slices), 4
oz. of kombucha and about 2
oz. of carrot juice. Knowing the ingredients to everything since I made it myself, and I estimated (rounding up, possibly by at least 50cals) that I've had around 500 calories today.
At that point I suddenly became very distraught because I realized my thighs and stomach had swollen considerably. I screamed to myself "What have I done?" and am now in a veritable state of panic. I did some pilates this morning and light walking, and plan to bicycle once the sun goes down a little more.
I've only gained two pounds, and everything I've had besides the wine was still incredibly healthy, but I'm wondering if I've completely messed up my whole fast. Starting over with the fast is not an option for me at this point as I have family reunions and school coming up shortly. I know I can go back to
juicing and work up to raw fruits/veggies again, but what are your suggestions? Thank you to anyone who has taken the time to read this far!
