Sounds like you've caught on to the most important part of the problem - DIET! Whenever our diet is particularly bad (SAD), the intestines and bowel become weak, mishapened and diseased. As this happens, the main eliminatory channel of the body is compromised and toxins begin to accumulate and recycle. It can become a downward spiral very quickly. You did not mention how your diet has changed, but, hopefully, it involves lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Drinking fresh wheatgrass juice will also help to alkalize and strengthen your body.
Since you are a student of the SNH, you might want to go to page 196 of the SNH book and read a case history on a man who had severe intestinal problems. As far as Dr. Christopher's protocal goes - he recommended, "The slippery elm is one of the most valuable medicines in the herbal world. This was an important botanical medicine and food for both the American Indians and pioneers. It possesses an abundant mucilage which will soothe irritation, disperse inflammation, draw out impurities, heal rapidly, and greatly strengthen. It is especially soothing and healing to irritated and inflamed surfaces, the various mucous membranes internally, or wounds, burn, chapped skin, etc. Externally it is most beneficial for inflammatory conditions of the stomach, lungs, intestines and urinary organs."
"The powder made into a mucilage beverage or gruel is a bland and nutritive food for babies, thus an excellent weaning food. It is also wonderful for the elderly or convalescents; it possesses as much nutrition as oatmeal, though it is much easier on the system, and is an excellent sustaing food. The gruel is a valuable remedy in all cases of weakness, pulmonary complaints, stomach inflammation, lung hemorrhage, etc. It is especially efficient in absorbing noxious gases and neutralizing any acidity in the stomach. Because of its mucilaginous nature, it is easy to assimilate and eliminate. Its action is so gentle that it can be retained by delicate stomachs when other substances are rejected. It is wonderful for checking infant diarrhea."
"Inflammation of bowels: When stirring, slowly pour 1 pint of boiling hot water over 1 ounce of powdered bark to make an infusion. Allow it to stand until proper enema temperature is reached. Strain off clear liquid and inject into the bowels."
For a laxative gruel, he recommended: "If you desire, in addition, prepare flaxseed and/or psysillium seed, licorice root, marshmallow root, comfrey root, each 3 parts and 1 part lobelia herb. Sweeten with honey if desired. Use as little or as much as you require for assisting in free easy bowel movements. The flaxseed and psysillium seed give bulk, the licorice root is a mild aperient (mildest of laxatives), the marshmallow root is to assist clearance where hard stools are prevalent, the comfrey root is the healer and rebuilder of weak areas and gives lubrication while the lobelia is the accentuating herb."
"It is not done "overnight" and must be done over a period of months. During these years of its use (Lower Bowel), we found at first, during the 1940's, people would state that it was griping. For this reason we added the ginger. Some asked, why not add an aid in the combination, for the nausea that happened in a few cases; so we added red raspberry leaves to relieve this condition and to add lost iron and fruit acids that were causing the problem. This was an additional help to each user, as well as to the ones who were upset."
In cases of irritable bowel syndrome, we have seen good results using Richard Shultz's Intestinal Formula 2. This is taken as a drink and does a good job in cleaning out the intestines and bowel.
