I have had Mirena for almost 7 months now. I am almost constantly in pain. On the left and right side of my pelvic area. I have my period whenever it wants to start and spot in between. I basically stay bleeding. I have lost weight because it makes me stay not hungry, depressed, gloomy, sad, among other negative feelings. I always feel like I am in a hole and can not get out. It hurts before and especially after intercourse. I stay tired, and my boyfriend thinks I am anemic. I wasn't like this before. The doctors try to tell me it is the "baby blues" but right before I got it and I had my daughter I was fine. Now I am 5'8", 115-120 pounds (the healthy weight is around 135-140) I am always tired and want to sleep. Never hungry, always sad, in pain, aggravated, have mood swings, hair loss, head aches, acne, irritable, losing weight. Some days I just want to lay in bed all day in the fetal position and cry. I never felt like this before and the only thing that has changed is my birth control. I searched through many sites to see if anyone else felt this way. Apparently many do. My boyfriend is to the point to where he wants to take it out himself. Can you do that? About how much does it cost for a doctor to do it? I have all these questions but no answers. I hope someone will read this and be able to possibly answer at least one.

Sorry you are feeling so badly. everything you are experiencing sounds like Mirena side effects.
I would NOT recommend your boyfriend pulling it out for you. Typically, the removal is very simple and painless, but if it has gotten embedded (amongst other complications) self removal can be dangerous. I would be particularly concerned considering all your pain and bleeding. It may have been inserted improperly.
I would call your doc and ask about removal cost. It varies tremendously depending on where you live and if you are covered by insurance.

This is a reply to # 1,532,367depending on your income and whether you have insurance, Planned Parenthood may be able to remove it for free. I know I recieved free birth control there for years before I had health insurance, and when I was making very little money.
However, considering the long-term costs of keeping the Mirena in -- emotionally, but also through related medical expenses (I've probably spent around $2,000 out of pocket this last year getting tested for autoimmune conditions, allergies, getting eye treatment, and seeking naturopathic care) $120 is worth it. I had my suspicions about Mirena, but left it in for the same reason, which was much more expensive in the long-run, and my medical problems only got worse the longer it was left in.
I am also one of the minority, like you, who lost weight on Mirena. I am also 5'8, and at the worst of this, was down to 106 pounds and feeling too nauseated to eat. Scary and not fun! It's now 5 months post removal and I have gained some weight back and am starting, very slowly to feel more normal.

I was wondering where I could get on that kind of birth control and not pay out the butt. I know it only cost about $9 where she got it but she doesn't remember. This is a reply to # 1,533,879Before I had insurance, and when I was making VERY little money, I was able to get free birth control and exams from Planned Parenthood. This was for about 4 years. This may be a universal program PP has everywhere, or may just have been because I live in a large, socially progressive city. It won't hurt to check.
But I'd also caution against the pill at least until your body gets all of the fake hormones from Mirena out of your system and you feel normal again. Which may take awhile. Though I was on the pill for around 6 years, I started experiencing some of the same problems I have with Mirena at the end of year 6, and didn't start feeling normal again for about a year after I quit the pill. This is the exception not the rule, but I know I won't be using hormonal birth control ever again (which is a little bit of a bummer, since I am only in my mid-twenties). I don't think the pill is good for womens' bodies anymore, especially after our systems have been compromised once with Mirena.
Ugh. Yes -- the anorexic thing. It's embarassing to be so underweight and not be able to put more on, and when people say "Oh my GOD, you are so SKINNY!" They act as if you're supposed to take it as a compliment. Personally I felt like I looked sick, and felt physically sick all the time and missed a summer at the beach because I was too self-conscious. The good news : I'm FINALLY starting to gain weight, and my pre-Mirena jeans fit again without a saggy butt!- Re: mirena questions asbaker

This is a reply to # 1,533,926Everyone hear says, "Wow! You've lot so much weight. You're so skinny. Are you on crack, or meth, or anything like that?" Wow... what a compliment. All I can say is "I wish I could afford those drugs." And laugh. What am I supposed to say? It gets old really quick. At first I was happy. I went up to 204 when I was pregnant. So I took it as a compliment. Now everyone asks if I'm on drugs or if I eat. Now my own boyfriend checklists everything I consumed EVERY day. What a way to make someone feel loved and trusted. It's made me anemic, too. On top of everything else. That's just what I wanted. I looked up the Planned Parenthood. The nearest one is like 45 miles away I think it said. I think I'm going to wait about 2-3 months before I start on more birth control. I just want to ask about it since I'll be paying that much for a visit anyways. Want to get my moneys worth. Ha ha. I do have to say my dad is excited. He wants me to get pregnant again so bad. He's trying to convince us to get married by next year. I dunno. I am kind of scared about even the thought of being pregnant right now. What if I feel this bad and I'm having these side effects. Would it hurt the baby? This is a reply to # 1,534,151Well, if it makes you feel better, I'm definitely gaining weight again, though it took more than a couple months for that to happen. I think about month 4 post-mirens is when I started noticing that my clothes fit better. But everybody is different. There's another recent post about weightloss and Mirena, and I think wandjmom who also experienced Mirena weight loss, started gaining it back more quickly after Mirena was removed.
My problem has also been horrible IBS which I'm fairly certain was caused by Mirena. It was pretty obvious that my body just wasn't absorbing the nutrients I was putting in -- since I was running to the bathroom 4-5 times a day! I was tested for all kinds of food allergies and stomach infections, some tests which came back positive, but surprise! The only thing that has helped me feel better is getting the Mirena removed. 2 months after Mirena was removed, I had the most awful nausea, heartburn, and acid reflux of my life, which lasted close to 2 months, but I'm happy to say is mostly behind me now! Must have been those darn hormones rebalancing!
I'm wishing you health and good luck! And also for family and friend understanding. I think men try to understand, but because they can't go through it, they just don't get how horrible all of this can be. I've read that the progestins in Mirena can make it into breastmilk, but I don't know how long after removal this lasts. I've also never been pregnant, so I don't know how a body would react (frankly the idea scares me after having my hormones go haywire this time!). Be kind to your body and get the Mirena out of there!

This is a reply to # 1,534,469That's a good thing. I'm going to a family Christmas Party tonight. They haven't seen me since my daughter was a week old. So I'm expecting more drug and anorexic comments. It used to be a compliment. Now it's just annoying because no one believes me. The weird thing is is when I do get hungry I can't stop. Yesterday I had a hungry day. I ate 3-4 times in 4 hours. They were manly sized meals, too. Yet no weight gain because I go back to not being hungry for sometime between 3 days and 2 weeks. Did you get the same feelings? Do you know anyone to talk to about post mirena pregnancy? We talked about it last night and we're going to try for a baby. :D I'm excited, just a little worried about the effects it might have on an unborn baby.

This is a reply to # 1,534,469Well. I am officially Mirena free as of yesterday afternoon (3:00p.m.). I had my boyfriend go that way I wouldn't forget to ask questions, and if I did he would remember. I asked mainly about the cramping and messed up periods. Just so you all know what's going on...
ME: "Has anyone else complained of any symptoms like this before?"
DOC: "The only people who have had any complaints like this one are people who have also had underlying conditions."
ME: "What kind of underlying conditions?"
DOC: "If you have had or do have ovarian cysts or endometrium."
ME: " But I have never had these problems."
DOC: "Well, if you have been on birth control for more than a year or two, most females all of their lives, then it hides it. You're body doesn't let you know. Once you get off Mirena, if the cramps still occur, you need to be on birth control you're whole life or deal with the pain. There's is nothing we can do because it is an underlying condition, whether you knew about it or not."
HOLD ON !! I have only been on birth control ONCE before. For maybe 7 months. Please explain this to me. I have never had any type of problems, EVER! All of a sudden I get on Mirena, THE MIRACLE BIRTH CONTROL, and I have underlying conditions? Ones that are my fault and I failed t see? Are those not the doctors jobs? When did I start examining my insides myself? Ugh. I am getting pissed off royally! Anyways, all in all at my doctors visit with all of the exams and conversations...
These are my results:
I am perfectly healthy.
No signs of ovarian cysts or endometrium.
The doctor didn't want me blaming Mirena so he, most literally, blamed me for my side effects. They charged me over $100 and lab fees? Why lab fees? I got no blood work or anything. AND they also gave me two other appt. Why? I am cancelling them. GET ALL THE MONEY WHILE YOU CAN! is what they're thinking. I am cancelling them and never going back to them. I will never recommend them and also if anyone asks highly condemn them. This is ridiculous.
Honestly, I'm not that smart. That's why I took my boyfriend in the room with me. He's highly intelligent and the things I don't get he does, vice versa. Between the two of us, the doctor gave political answers, BS answers, and avoided other questions altogether. What doctor says that a woman has to live her life on birth control? That was his recommendation. No. That was his suggestion. To get rid of the pain I had to live on fake hormones. Besides, I did it to myself. CRAP! I ordered the birth control. Might pick it up Friday. If the pain in my sides and lower abdomen go away there's no way. If it doesn't then I will. If the pain goes away after a week on it. Maybe I'll be convinced. The pain is NO WHERE near as bad as it was. It's just minor cramps that I don't even feel the need to take Advil for. No bleeding, nothing. I didn't wake up with a headache, backache, extreme stomach pains, etc. I woke up crabby (but due to lack of sleep, nothing more)a tad bit of pain that feels like the monthly warning, not the usual fetal position advil pain, and nausea. Oh yeah, beware! I stayed nauseous about 1 hour after they took it out up until ... well, I still do. Ha ha. It's almost exactly like morning sickness nausea, though. I can deal with that better than everything else it was causing. I will update if anything changes, for better or worse. I hope everyone else on Mirena who is dealing with this gets better or gets it taken out. If you want birth control and don't mind a pill I know a really good one. I have literally NEVER heard a single complaint about it, it's nine bucks a month straight up. Imagine paying that with insurance!! Hope everyone has a great day!- Re: mirena questions Bass81

My dr. refused to admit that any of my symptoms were related to Mirena but took it out anyway.
The thing that made me most angry about removal, however (I was expecting my dr's bad attitude) were also the lab fees. According to my doctor, Bayer REQUIRES that before removal every patient be given a pregnancy test. Does Bayer pay for this test? NO. The costs are passed on to be, no matter that I had been tested two months prior with my yearly pap etc. and that because of Mirena I had been literally TOO SICK TO HAVE SEX for 8 months. SURPRISE! Not pregnant. She wouldn't remove it until I had the test taken, otherwise I would have left the office as soon as the speculum was removed.
Sigh . . . Just glad that part is over and we're all recovering. Good luck and good health! Watch out for the crash, and if it happens try not to be too discouraged.- Re: mirena questions asbaker

This is a reply to # 1,537,152So far I've seen a difference. As weird as it sounds. It was almost overnight. I woke up happier. I had no pains or cramps today. I was tired, but only due to lack of sleep. It didn't wear me out walking up the stairs. I didn't snap so quickly. My daughter didn't piss me off. I am genuinely happy. My boyfriend can tell a difference, too. I'm not snapping at him, I'm not depressed. I didn't take one single advil today. I am hoping I don't fall after all of this. Today was such a good day. I don't want to lose it. ha ha. I hope that doesn't sound silly. I can deal with nausea. I've been pregnant. Besides, it's so much better than all of the other things I was experiencing with Mirena.

This is a reply to # 1,538,529Is this your first period post Mirena? My first one was just like that too. I have never been a heavy bleeder and I was changing tampons every two or three hours for the first three days. I also had a lot of blood clots. I think it is normal. The blood clots go away after the first period, but I still continue to have heavier bleeding than I used to. It isn't as bad as that first period though.

This is a reply to # 1,538,806I just wanted to say "thank you mirena..." I had a miscarriage last week. Never again will I put hormones in my body. I'll have a billion more kids before I use birth control again. Guess I'm becoming Catholic.

This is a reply to # 1,532,352I agree with Bass81. Make the appt. and have it taken out. Normally, they make you pay after the visit, so just tell them you forgot your atm card or just pay them what you can. Most dr.s will bill you. Best of luck to you!!!
