What you are doing is alkalinizing your digestive system, which is a common area for Candida to be found. So yes, you are going to make your Candida a lot worse by alklainizing the stomach and intestines.
How many people do you know that cured themselves of Candida with alklainizing? I never heard of any. I hear people say they have their Candida under control with the alkalinizing and anti-Candida diets, but then they also say they still can't eat anything with sugar. Sorry, but that is not having the Candida under control. Everyone has Candida, it is a natural part of the body. And there are plenty of people out there, like me, that can eat whatever they want. Those are the people that truly have their Candida under control because their immune systems and the acids from the stomach and flora keep that Candida under control.
Taking substances like baking soda, calcium oxide/hydroxide, or magnesium oxide/hydroxide will just wipe out the acids of the digestive system, which in turn will cause the Candida to go out of control. Even worse the hydroxides are extremely powerful free radicals, and are so caustic that they burn the tissues. This is why there are warnings on so many hydroxide products to avoid skin contact. Would you drink lye (sodium hydroxide) or Drano (potassium hydroxide)? Of course not because they would burn the hell out of your tissues because ALL hydroxides are caustic. So why would you ingest calcium or magnesium hydroxide? In fact magnesium hydroxide (Milk of Magnesia) works as a laxative because this hydroxide chemically burns the intestinal wall. This stimulates the release of large amounts of fluid in to the intestines and increases peristalsis. It also increases the risk of intestinal cancer due to the inflammation from the repetitive burning of the intestinal wall.
Getting back to the Candida, a simple way to understand this is to consider why women get Candida infections from antibiotics. The answer is simple. The vaginal pH is supposed to be acidic, just like the intestines, and skin. These acids come from the Lactobacillus bacteria that produce lactic acid, acetic acid, and fatty acids that control the growth of the Candida. When the antibiotics are killed off the acid production is lowered leading to an alkaline state of the terrain. So the Candida does in to growth mode, and converts in to its aggressive fungal form. Thus the Candida infection. Killing off the flora in the intestines also creates an alkaline environment, and again we see gas and bloating from the Candida overgrowth fermenting dietary sugars. We see thrush as the acid forming bacteria in the oral cavity are killed off. We see fungal skin infections for the same reason.
Actually the whole acid/alkaline thing is pretty much garbage. Acidosis is pretty rare. This is because the body has many redundant systems to make sure its pH remains in a narrow range. This is because both acidosis and alkalosis are extremely dangerous. The body can only live within a narrow pH range. So the body uses everything various methods such as regulation of respiratory rate, bicarbonate, mineral reserves, etc. to help maintain its narrow pH range. Therefore, if the body goes too acid or too alkaline the body will quickly adjust that pH back to its normal range. As examples, when we run hard we form acidic lactate. But the lungs work harder to increase oxygen levels to remove that excess lactate. That is why we still breathe hard for a short time after we stop running even though the muscles no longer need the extra oxygen. Once the lactate levels drop our respiration decreases to prevent alkalosis. So in the opposite, if we hyperventilate we go really alkaline immediately. This causes the blood vessels going to the brain to constrict cutting off the blood supply to the brain and we pass out. To compensate the respiration shuts down to build up carbon dioxide, which forms carbonic acid that dilates the blood vessels restoring blood flow to the brain.
The claim that the lymphatic system is too acidic is even more ridiculous. The lymphatic system is closely tied to the vascular system, and maintains a pH slightly higher (more alkaline) than the blood.
So the body knows what it is doing, and therefore trying to force a specific pH on a healthy body is just asking for health issues. They may not be noticeable right away, but they will happen if continued. People make the mistake of thinking that if something makes them feel better that it must be curing their condition or making them healthier. This is not always the case. If someone has acid reflux, which results from a lack of stomach acid, an antacid or acid blocker will make them feel better by knocking out any traces of acid left in the stomach. So is their problem cured? Of course not, this is just masking the symptoms while making the condition worse. In the long run the person risks nutritional deficiencies, infections, increased risk of heart disease, decreased bone density, connective tissue disorders, etc. Again this also applies to the ingestion of baking soda, calcium oxide/hydroxide or magnesium oxide/hydroxide. If a person has cancer and the chemo puts their cancer in to remission do they feel better? Of course. Is their disease gone? Of course not. Is the treatment dangerous even though it makes them feel better? Definitely, all chemo drugs are known carcinogens and have numerous other side effects. So don't fall for the false deception of testimonials as being the only evidence to the health claims being made. You will still a lot healthier that way!!!
Is magnesium malate ok to take, or will this too alkalise the intestines?
No, magnesium malate is an acidified form of magnesium. The acidified forms of magnesium are much safer and better absorbed. Another benefit of the magnesium malate is that both the magnesium and the malic acid it is bound to are both precursors for the formation of ATP, which fuels the cells and helps them to function properly.
ive been flamed to the death before for this so ill rewrite am i right in thinking candida rarely goes systemic unless your severely immuno compromised cancer/aids?
Yes, this is true. Systemic actually means throughout the body or affecting the whole body. The problem I have with people claiming to have systemic Candida is that rarely goes beyond the digestive system, skin, and female organs. It RARELY goes in to the blood. And again this is why I have such a problem with these sales groups doing live blood cell analysis when they don't have the training to know what they are really looking at. I addressed this issue in this post:
http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=1481369#i
I doubt if most of these people would know the difference between a white blood cell and Candida under the microscope either. But they count on the public's ignorance of the subject. They can point to a speck of dust in the blood sample and call it Candida and the average person would be none the wiser.
Any tips on how to get candida under control?
The trick to getting Candida under control is to get the immune system back in control. A good start to this is with probiotics, like kefir, and prebiotics, such as rice bran and FOS. Yucca root is another good choice as it helps to kill the yeast while making a more suitable terrain for the growth of the flora.
Stress also adversely affects the immune system, which again helps Candida to thrive. There are many aspects to the immune system, but a couple of primary areas to focus on are the flora and the adrenal glands. To address the adrenals vitamin C is the most important. The B vitamin pantothenic acid is the second most important nutrient for the adrenals. Adaptogenic herbs are excellent for building up the adrenal glands. These include schisandra berries, jiaogulan, licorice root, suma, ashwagandha, Siberian ginseng, and astragalus. As you build up the adrenals you will also find that dealing with stress will become easier as the adrenals release more anti-stress hormones.
Zinc is also essential for proper immune function and suppresses Candida. Recommended dose is 50mg once daily, or 25mg twice daily, with meals to prevent nausea. It does displace copper in high doses. Even though we tend to get plenty of copper from our food and water some people advise taking extra copper. Some companies do make a combined 50mg zinc with 2 mg copper. Or you can get a separate 2mg copper capsule and take one a day.
Maintaining proper stomach acidity is essential as acid kills yeast and alkalinity is its friend. Stomach acid naturally declines with age making Candida overgrowth of the digestive system very common. The zinc I mentioned will help in the production of stomach acid. B vitamins (B6, B12, folate) are also essential for the production of stomach acid. Foods high in B vitamins, such as rice bran or oat bran are recommended or a B complex twice daily with meals. The problem is that these nutrients are also acid dependent for absorption. So the declining stomach acid actually interferes with the absorption of the nutrients needed to produce it. To get around this it is a very good idea to take something acidic with your meals for a while to enhance absorption. These can be non-buffered vitamin C (ascorbic acid), citric acid, malic acid, apple cider vinegar, or betaine HCl. In addition I recommend trimethylglycine (TMG), derived from beet leaves, 3 times daily, which among other things will boost the immune system and help the body to generate the digestive secretions it requires. It can be a little hard to find, but some health food stores carry it. It runs around $11 a bottle.
The flora is another area to focus on. Probiotic bacteria produce lactic, acetic, and fatty acids that keep Candida under control. You can jump start their numbers with probiotic supplements like kefir. I recommend a glass first thing in the morning and a glass at night before bed. Follow with a little water to wash the acids off your teeth and to help dilute the stomach acid to help the bacteria to survive. Even with this there are only a limited number of the thousands of beneficial strains of bacteria that inhabit the intestines. Therefore, prebiotics are also recommended. Prebiotics are the foods that feed the flora so they can grown and thrive. Excellent choices include the fibers rice bran, oat bran and fructooligosaccharides (FOS).
I also mentioned yucca root earlier. This herb cuts down on the fermentation caused by the Candida, and kills Candida. It also holds moisture in the intestines making a more suitable environment for the flora.
Avoid anything that alkalinizes the stomach acid. This includes antacids, acid blockers, and alkaline waters. Stomach acid is one of the body's first line defenses against pathogens. Neutralizing it is just asking for problems.
I feel almost swollen (water weight?)
Throughout the body, or in the abdominal region?
Would it be ok to continue with Molasses, Lemon juice, and kelp?
I would be cautious with the molasses. For one it is iron rich and iron is something to be really careful with. Many nasty bacteria thrive in the presence of iron, and iron can promote oxidative damage. There are also conditions, such as hemochromotosis where iron is definitely contradicted. Furthermore, most people have no easy way to efficiently rid their bodies of excess iron. Menstruating women are an exception. But if a woman is not having regular menstruation or are not sure if they are iron deficient anemic then it is a really bad idea to use high iron supplements. And unless men know for sure that they are iron deficient anemic they should also avoid high iron supplements, especially with the lemon juice as vitamin C improves iron absorption further increasing the risk of iron overload.
The lemon juice and kelp are fine. In fact I am a big fan of kelp. The one thing to be aware of though is that most kelps (seaweeds) are rich in polysaccharides. These are immune stimulatory. This is great for most people but not in individuals that have autoimmune issues.
I've expalined some of the basics, here is an advanced explanation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stomach_acid
Gastric acid secretion happens in several steps. Chloride and hydrogen ions are secreted separately from the cytoplasm of parietal cells and mixed in the canaliculi. Gastric acid is then secreted into the lumen of the oxyntic gland and gradually reaches the main stomach lumen. Chloride and sodium ions are secreted actively from the cytoplasm of the parietal cell into the lumen of the canaliculus. This creates a negative potentialof -40 mV to -70 mV across the parietal cell membrane that causes potassium ions and a small number of sodium ions to diffuse from the cytoplasm into the parietal cell canaliculi. The enzyme carbonic anhydrase catalyses the reaction between carbon dioxide and water to form carbonic acid. This acid immediately dissociates into hydrogen and bicarbonate ions. The hydrogen ions leave the cell through H+/K+ ATPase antiporter pumps. At the same time sodium ions are actively reabsorbed. This means the majority of secreted K+ and Na+ ions return to the cytoplasm. In the canaliculus, secreted hydrogen and chloride ions mix and are secreted into the lumen of the oxyntic gland. The highest concentration that gastric acid reaches in the stomach is 160 mM in the canaliculi. This is about 3 million times that of arterialblood, but almost exactly isotonic with other bodily fluids. The lowest pH of the secreted acid is 0.8,[1] but the acid is diluted in the stomach lumen to a pH between 1 and 3.
Wow! I hope the body knows what it's doing, messing around with all this chemistry. At least, I hope it is better than me in the 60's with little explosions that would make my family freak. They preferred that I take my experiments outside.
I also hope that I'm providing my body with all the nutrients that it needs for such chemistry.
We are not really fooling around with the chemistry, we are providing the body with what it needs to do its job properly. No different than getting a lot of the same stuff through diet, which also provides things our body needs to function. But the body is not designed to deal with things like antacids, acid blockers, endocrine disruptors, etc. We are merely giving the body some tools to help deal with the problems that these and other things that screw up the body's natural processes.
Thanks HV - The weight gain, bloated feeling is mostly in the abdominal area. Why do you ask?
If you are accumulating water gravity will pull it towards the feet, which would be seen as edema around the ankles. If it progresses then other areas also become edemic gradually going up the body.
Accumulation of fluid in the abdominal area (ascites) can indicate liver damage.
But bloating from gas in the abdominal area indicates fermentation. This can be from food not digesting properly, which causes it to rot, or from fermentation by Candida in the stomach. Both are indicative of low stomach acid. The fermentation produces gas that contributes to belching and acid reflux. Candida overgrowth in the intestines leads to excessive gas in the intestines increasing flatulence. This indicates low levels of intestinal flora. The flora produce acids that keep the Candida under control. The lack of flora can also cause other problems such as IBS or constipation.
thanks, very enlightening on the whole acid/alkaline balance thing. One question then - why does the saliv ph of people vary so much? Mine tends to be 5.5 or below, when measured in the mornings. My wife's tends to be around 7. There's a survey onhttp://www.alkalizeforhealth.net/salivaphtest.htm
which shows that the majority of cancer patients tend to have lower saliva ph.
Would love to learn more about this issue. thx!
This is why I don't trust saliva pH testing. Foods, the amount of saliva secretion and the amount of bacteria in the mouth at any one time will all alter the pH of the mouth. It is not a true indicator of blood pH.
I agree that saliva ph is not a good indicator of blood ph. From what I know, the blood ph can't vary too much from 7.4, otherwise you die immediately.
Right, this is why the body has so many redundant systems to maintain its pH. That is also why all this hype about the lymphatic system being too acidic, and acidity causing disease, etc, is really bogus.
The answer to that is simple. When we sleep saliva production shuts down. Saliva helps to alkalinize the mouth and wash away acid forming bacteria in the mouth. So when we sleep the bacteria levels go up, also resulting in "morning breath", causing a lower (acidic) pH in the mouth. As we wake up and become more active saliva helps to wash away some of the bacteria and brings the pH of the mouth back up.
