Black Cumin Seed for Cancer, Immune Disorders, Asthma, Cooking and More
by Tony Isaacs
Black Cumin, or Nigella sativa, is one the most revered medicinal seeds in history. Black cumin seeds were found in the tomb of Tutankhamun and are mentioned in the Bible as well as in the words of the Prophet Mohammed. Today they are used for a wide variety of conditions including cancer, immune disorders, asthma, digestive disorders and much more.
The famous Greek physician Dioscorides used black cumin seeds to treat headaches and toothaches. Mohammed said that black cumin cures every disease but death itself. The reason might be found in the complex chemical structure of the seeds. These little seeds have over one hundred different chemical constituents, including abundant sources of all the essential fatty acids. It is the oil that is most often used medicinally, but the whole seeds, which are a bit spicy, are often used whole in cooking—curries, pastries, and Mediterranean cheeses.
NOTE: More than one plant is often referred to as "Black Cumin". Only the genuine Nigella sativa is referred to in this article.

I did not refer to it as black seed, I referred to it as black cumin and included the scientific name of the correct form of black cumin I was writig about, Nigella sativa. Black Cumin is sometimes referred to as black seed, and also variously referred to as Black Caraway, Black Cumin, Damascena, Devil in-the-bush, Fennel flower, Melanthion, Nutmeg Flower, Roman Coriander, and Wild Onion Seed.
Are you saying that the reference to the Natural News story may not be accurate because they were talking about a different black seed? My post is intended to be about black cumin aka Nigella sativa.

I understand, but Nigella sativa is often referred to far and wide as black caraway. I suppose the best thing to do is to tell everyone to make sure that what they are getting is Nigella sativa regardless of what it is called.

I guess far and wide have different meanings to different folks. I did a Google search for pages that had all of these words before I made my post:
"black cumin black caraway"
and I got back 36,700 hits. When I went through the first couple of dozen I kept seeing over and over and over again where black cumin was referred to as black caraway and vice versa.
If you do a search for"Nigella sativa black caraway" you only get 6,330 hits.
The thing is that black seed, aka black cumin, aka Nigella sativa are often referred to as black caraway. Which is not to be confused with the common spice caraway any more than it is not to be confused with the common spice cumin.
It does not matter if it is referred to far and wide or just a few places incorrectly or correctly. The important thing is to make sure people know to get Nigella sativa no matter what it is called and they will have the right one.
Thanks for the info to let me know to update my posts and article so no one made a mistake. You might be right - a black cumin forum might be useful, though I am not sure how many are aware of it yet.

I changed my article and my posts to say to be sure that you are only getting Nigella sativa and noted that sometimes the names are confused. That should surely be sufficient. Since sometimes black caraway is actually used for N. sativa that should also work to keep people from turning away from a genuine black cumin item.
I really do not think I could make it any plainer, but perhaps I will come up with an even better revision and warning.
