Someone wrote that Psyllium is better for cleaning out the intestines BECAUSE it's a soluble fiber -- he added "which expands" as the basis for it being better.
This is totally backwards. It's NOT as good as flax seeds (ground of course) BECAUSE it's soluble.
Flax seeds are a combination of both soluble and insoluble fibers -- plus a good source of Omega 3's.
Soluble Fiber can be digested (because it's soluble) and enters into the blood stream where it helps to lower blood cholesterol and slows absorption time of glucose into
the blood stream, thus lowering blood
Sugar levels too.
INSOLUBLE FIBER cannot be broken down, so it remains as an undigested fiber when passing through the intestines and thus cleanses the colon (and other areas of the intestines).
You can do a search online for "soluble fiber" and "insoluble fiber." There are MANY sites that explain the differences between the two. But it's the INSOLUBLE FIBER in flax seeds that makes
them better for cleansing -- once again because it's insoluble and itself is not digested. And it contains the very beneficial soluble fiber & omega-3 fatty acids as well. Good stuff!
I like to put them in health shakes or yogurt because they're too hard mixed in just water, and they hurt my throat.
They must be ground up, otherwise the seeds will pass through whole without providing any benefits. And once ground, store them in a container in the fridge.
You can purchase them bulk at most health food stores as well as Market Street United for about a buck a pound. I only take 2 Tbls. a day, and it's recommended
that you never go over 4 Tbls. per day. Do a search on flax seeds to find out more about this.
