I think that we can all agree that the majority of us on this forum are the ones that suffer from the negative side effects of mirena.
I chose mirena because I have had negative reactions to the pill. My periods got worse while I was on it. I ended up in the ER after one month of being on yasmin.
The convenience of Mirena sounded great.
However I had 2.5 years of pure torture. I kept mine in for that long because I kept hoping it would get better.
One thing that I didnt know, until this forum (thank you ladies), is that Mirena is made by the same company that makes Depo.
I dont want to scare you off. I know many people who have mirena and have had NO side effects at all. No weight gain, periods, mood swings or anything.
And really you arent going to know how you are going to react to it unless you try it.
Maybe talk with you Dr some more. Let s/he know what your past is with other BC. And be sure to ask if they will take it out at your request. Some ppl on here say that their Drs wont take it out.

If you have had problems with any kind of hormonal birth control, my answer to your question is a resounding "NO"! I wish I had found this site before I had that awful device put in, I would have never gotten it. I had been on OrthoTricyclen years ago for 4 or 5 years before I realized it was slowly affecting my mood and libido. After having my son last year, My OB/GYN made the mirena sound like a perfect method of bc, telling me I wouldn't have the same side-effects as the pill. HUGE lie... I only had the IUD 3 months and the effects were insane: weight gain, mood swings, joint pain, insomnia, irritability, breakouts, depression. And once you realize your body is not tolerating well, it seems to take forever to get better once it's out. I've had it out 3 months now, and the side effects come back before and during my period. PLEASE, save yourself the aggravation and don't get it in the first place, it's time you can't get back!

That's why I've been on here, too. I had my second child 6 months ago and have tried 3 types of pills and the Nuvaring since his birth. Though I'd never had problems with pills in the past, I kept getting my period after the first 7-10 days on all 3 types I tried. I got on the Nuvaring, and though I loved the convenience, I was having chronic headaches, visual auras, spotting, random vomiting spells and even passed out in the middle of my living room at 4:30 one morning. I couldn't have mustered the strength to get off the floor even if one of my children had been in danger, I had to lay there for 30 minutes until my husband almost stepped on me! My doctor even said he was worried about me and suggested Mirena. My insurance won't cover it (I haven't met my deductible), so I'll have to pay $700 for the product and insertion. Primarily due to the cost, I've been doing a lot of research and am finding that I may still have the problems that it professes to alleviate. Have others of you used Mirena because it was kind of a "last resort" on the birth control front?

NO, and I couldn't be more serious. I am not a dr. but I do know now that I would not even have considered the mirena if I had known that it would have put me in the biggest rut of my life for nearly 6 months now. I personally would not suggest it. I have regreted it and have had it just over 2 years and they can not find the strings
