Visualization To Relieve Stress

Here is a visualization for times when you must escape for a while.

I created this visualization more than a decade ago when I was teaching a seminar for family caregivers. I have used it many times. Once I was suffering from a blood pressure spike that put my BP in stroke range; by using this I was able to lower my blood pressure almost thirty points in a few minutes with no medication. The key is to make the image so strong you can feel the sensations. Simply see yourself doing the things I describe, or create your own peaceful place where you can escape.

You are driving down a peaceful highway that runs next to the ocean, you cannot see the beach or ocean because of the high sand dune that runs next to the highway, but you know it is there. Listen to the sound of the waves. Now, pull your car over, and get out and begin to climb the dune. Once you reach the top you see a secluded beach without another person in sight. Walk down to the beach and shed your clothes. See the vast expanse of ocean in front of you, smell the tangy salt air, hear the gentle rush of waves lapping the sandy wet beach. Feel the warmth of the sun beating down on you, but notice too, the cooling breeze wafting off the water.

Walk down to the water's edge and raise your arms; allow the cool ocean breeze and the warm sun to touch every inch of your body. Breathe deeply and slowly exhale. Now wiggle your bare feet in the hot sand. Feel the grit of the sand, feel the heat of the sand. Now keep moving your feet until they reach the cool wet sand inches below the hot dry upper layer. Feel the contrast between the hot and the cool, the dry grit and the moist layer. Take time to notice the contrast your senses are experiencing, the warmth of the sun and the coolness of the sea breeze, the hot dry sand and the cool moist sand, the silence of your secluded beach broken only by the monotony of the breaking waves. Smell the fresh air mixed with the tangy-salty scent of the sea water. Keep breathing deeply and slowly walk into the water. At first it is warm, almost hot, then as you continue to walk it becomes cooler. Allow the cool water to wash over your body, let yourself float as the waves gently wash over you. You are safe here, there is nothing or no one to disturb your peace and sense of well being. Just float and relax; allow every sense to be touched by the beauty of this place.

When you feel relaxed and at peace, enjoy this special place a few moments more, then slowly walk back to the dune, put on your clothes and drive away. Be assured that this special private beach will always be here when you need to visit again.
