Taking the pledge: "I will be helpfull today"
Helpfull people can become servants, or change the world
Date: 7/4/2007 5:29:18 PM ( 17 y ) ... viewed 1929 times Some people wake up every day with the thought that they will go out and find someone, someplace, somehow, to be helpfull. Not many actually do wake up thinking that, maybe the Dalia Lama and so on, but nonetheless, it is in the back of a lot of regular people's minds.
People in general do want to do good, but we get too stressed, stretched too thin, or have too many of our own problems, and stop being helpfull to others. Or, that the ones you help just keep on asking... and then it becomes more like sacrifice, or like you became that person's personal helper. You will burn out quickly if you start "serving" instead of just carrying a postive attitude, and being 'ready to help out'.
The idea of "waking up wanting to be helpfull" was not meant to become anything like that, it is more like a state of mind, a substitute for being totally selfish all day long. It is almost enough to simply say "I will do no harm today", which is a totally beautifull thing all by itself.
As we go about our days, we can be willing to help those who suddenly find themselves in a bind, instead of going around hoping for a situation that you can take advantage of for persoanl gain [if everyone did that, there would be much less crime, much less loss, much less stress, etc.]
Maybe the best way, for me, is to make an effort to stay in a positive frame of mind. If the 'daily hassles' starts to get to me, I will become angry and lash out at others - avoiding that kind of reaction is just like giving everybody around you a break, and thats very helpfull. If I become negative, I know the world around me takes on that tone too. If I let my frustartions, or my physical pains, turn me into a raging monster then I am not helping anyone, and probably will soon be looking for help myself.
So there - being helpfull might mean not lifting a finger, but just keeping the postive things going, and avoiding the negatives or at least avoid having a bad reaction to negatives[since there are many each day]. This is NOT a cop-out, it does take effort to be in that state of mind. AND, of course, I need to point out that "if everyone did that, we would have a positive world".
