I want to point out that Congresswoman
Susan Davis helped with the start of the
Hilcrest Farmers; Market.
http://www.hillcrestfarmersmarket.com/about.html
The market originally opened with only 35 vendors on the second Sunday in April 1997. The market has been incredibly successful since it first opened and retains the reputation as "The Best" Farmers Market in San Diego County. It was late in 1995 when then acting President of the Hillcrest Business Association David Cohen determined that Hillcrest needed a farmers market and that the Hillcrest Business Association was going to be the market sponsor and find a suitable location in Hillcrest to host it. After tirelessly searching for a site and with the help and influence of Congresswoman Susan Davis, State Assembly Person at the time, a deal was finally made with the Department of Motor Vehicles to use their parking lot.
"For the life of me," he said,
"I cannot understand why the terrorists
have not attacked our food supply because
it is so easy to do."

Aroused by the message of Daniel Imhoff
author of "Foodfight", The Citzen's Guide to
a Food and Farm Bill, Leslie Goldman,
Your Enchanted Gardener, spoke out in
favor of support for local organic farming
and gardens in every school.
His message was delivered
before a town meeting called by Congress Woman
Susan Davis, D-San Diego County, 53rd District.
His message was received with applause from
the group.
Andrew Weil, M.D. in his call to action
at the Public Forum of his Nutrition and Health
Conference, told the group at the Manchester Grand Hyatt
May 15 asked a large assemby of more than 300
to contact their local congress represents
and take interest in the the upcoming Farm Bill
that is now being discussed in Washington D.C.
Leslie took Dr. Weil's message to heart, and four days
later met with his esteemed Congress Woman Susan Davis.
Davis, called a hard worker by musician Paris Bingo,
an observer of the Washington scene. According to
Mr. Bingo, Susan Davis is noted for her Bi-partisan
work, and is a major player in election reform and
asking the President to withdraw troops from Irag.
Leslie repeated the message of Michael Pollan,
author of "Omnivore's Dillemma,"
who said that the Secretary of Agriculture
under the Bush Administration, pointed out the dangers of all of our food
being centralized in a few key growing areas
of the country. That message came right after 911.
Little has been done, said Pollan, to remedy the situation.
Goldman believes that San Diego was once a growing capital of
food for our nation, and can be restored now to be a growing
capital of the U.S. for Organic locally grown foods.
Goldman works with local organic farmers, and had an outstanding
exhibit co-sponsored by Whole Foods Market at the San Diego
Earth Fair.
Most food is centralized through a warehouse and shipping
industry. Locally food on the other hand, is healthier
for many reasons, and insures food security, says Goldman.
Last year, he began working with the Whole Foods Market Hillcrest Store
to bring in locally grown strawberries and other foods from
Joe Rodriguez, one farmer who shares his foods through Farmers'
Markets and Whole Foods. Rodriguez is one of the growing number
of local farmers in various parts of the country who want their
produce to be sold within 100 miles or their outlets.
Joe the Farmer is a fictional character based on the real life
of Joe Rodriguez Jr. A Love Letter to Joe the Farmer is an inspired
writing that aims to purchase land where Joe and family will be able
to continue farming. The Current Rodriguez Ranch was sold five years ago.
Joe continues to lease that land where his family has farmed since
1958, and organically since 1985.
Joe plans include a teaching center for the next generation of local
farmers. He has that most farmers are now in their 60's. A new generation
of farmers needs to be trained.
Andrew Weil M.D., is one of the signers of A Love Letter to Joe the
Farmer, as is Daniel Imhoff, author of the "Foodfight" book.

Congress Woman Davis was given the gift
of a delicious Noel Stehly Ruby locally grown
Grapefruit to make his point. Noel Stehly

* Introduced legislation to regulate
the dietary supplement industry by giving
the Food and Drug Administration the necessary tools
to take dangerous dietary supplements off the shelf
I can agree with this.
I would also like to empower and educate the FDA
to take dangerous "fax" foods--non-foods--off the stage.
I will serve on the committee to identify these dangerous
substances poses as foods.

About Susan
Biography
Congresswoman Susan A. Davis represents California’s 53rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Susan’s interest in public affairs grew out of her experiences as a social worker, parent, youth mentor, and military spouse. Growing up, Susan remembered her father, a pediatrician, sometimes leaving the house in the middle of the night to care for his young patients. Through these life experiences, Susan developed an understanding of and deep commitment to improving her community and country.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Susan grew up in Richmond, California. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in sociology. She then earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of North Carolina.
After graduation, Susan and her husband, Steve, lived in Japan with their two children, Jeffery and Benjamin, while Steve served as a doctor in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Residents of San Diego since 1972, Susan and Steve have been married for 40 years. They have two grandchildren, Henry and Jane.
In Congress, Susan has earned a reputation as a bipartisan consensus builder. She is proud to serve on the House Armed Services Committee, the Education and Labor Committee, and the House Administration Committee. She is focusing on the issues of defense, education, election reform, the environment, health care, and veterans affairs, which is especially significant because of the large veterans population in San Diego and because her father served as a medic in World War II.
