Delores Huerta, Co-Founder of the United Farm Workers,
was the first signer of "A Love Letter to Joe the Farmer,"
a document that acknowledged local family farmers.
The Rodriguez Ranch Buy Back began as a proposal to buy back the 100
acre Rodriguez Ranch, where Joe Rodriguez Jr and family have farmed
since 1958, and organically since 1985. The Ranch was sold about five
years ago, and Joe now leases the property.
Conversations with the current owner are happening.
As of late May 2007, we are regrouping around the Land Purchase
and how to stabilize Joe's presence in San Diego County.
The future of local family farmer in San Diego asks that key
parcels be set aside for farm land. There numbers of parcels
that can be purchased.
I would like to see a new consciouseness that ensures that
farm land and housing development will progress side by side.
Land is needed for each mouth we are asked to feed.
San Diego County and the San Diego-Tijuana Region can support
growing enough local organic food to feed our people and make
the Region sustainable and self- sufficent. Currently much
of our food comes from far away places. Much of our food grown here
is exported to other places. Some of it is shipped and then
returns as part of the Warehouse System of Food Distribution.
