Memory loss is considered to be an abnormal amount of forgetfulness. Occasionally forgetting things and declining other cognitive functions are natural for aging adults. For example, when you walk into a room only to forget what you need or when you look for your glasses while they are on your head. However, knowing the differences between trivial memory loss and memory loss caused by a more severe issue is key to getting support. If you have trouble recognizing these differences, here is a list of five signs of memory loss.

1. Becoming Increasingly Forgetful

Normal memory loss associated with age does not get in the way of you living your day-to-day life. It is natural to forget things and then remember them later. You will undergo specific physiological changes that can cause interruptions in how your brain functions. These changes will make it harder for you to comprehend and retain certain information. When this happens, it is natural to question your cognitive abilities. For the most part, if you allow enough time, the information will eventually come back, but that is not always the case. Knowing the difference in natural age-related memory loss and other reasons indicative of cognitive issues is instrumental to your health.

Over time, change to your brain is unavoidable, but you can boost your brain's function with beneficial memory supplements. Also, doing simple things like putting puzzles together, working, reading and playing instruments are all ways to keep your brain active and healthy.

2. Losing the Ability To Find the Right Words

Another symptom of memory loss is the inability to find the right words to communicate effectively. You usually know the words you want to say, but you cannot articulate them with memory loss. For instance, losing your train of thought in the middle of a sentence and not coming up with the right words, or someone asking you a question to which you know the answer but cannot reply. This is concerning since it can be a red flag that something more alarming is behind the confusion.

3. Changing Behaviors and Personality

Memory loss can affect your personality and behaviors. These changes might be painful for some of your family and friends to witness. Memory loss can make you act out of character, like doing and saying things out of the ordinary. Often people with memory loss become combative when they lose their ability to communicate effectively. Here are some signs of possible changes:

  • Being aggressive because you cannot articulate how you are feeling. Specifically biting, hitting or kicking.

  • Undressing around others instead of privately when you are uncomfortable. This happens because you lose the ability to comprehend that your actions are inappropriate.

  • Becoming depressed since you can no longer communicate successfully or take care of yourself causes you to be embarrassed or feel useless.

  • Neglecting your self-care by not eating correctly, putting yourself in danger or not maintaining personal hygiene.

These changes may seem simple, but when paired with other declining cognitive abilities, it could mean something is going on that needs immediate attention.

4. Forgetting How To Perform Tasks

Forgetting how to perform routine tasks is another indication of memory loss. Warning signs such as forgetting how to use your car keys, having trouble recognizing simple words or not knowing how to tie your shoes anymore can all be frustrating. Remember to forget where something is different from not knowing how to do something.

5. Struggling With Familiar Faces and Areas

You have forgotten someone's name at one time or another, only to remember it as they walk away. It is common to forget someone as special as your loved ones or forget that you even had a relationship when suffering from memory loss. Even though you might forget their face or name, you might not forget feelings of happiness associated with your loved ones, making you feel safe and protected around them.

It can be overwhelming to think about the possibility of losing your memory since memory loss affects so many aspects of your life. Finding the underlying cause of your memory loss is one way to get the help you need. Therefore, it is essential to stay positive and be as proactive as possible by keeping your brain active.
