Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, refers to when your feet press flat on the ground. It is a problem that is commonly suffered and is generally nothing to worry about. You will be able to tell whether you have flat feet or not, as usually a foot would be slightly raised off the ground (and have an arch to it) when you are stood.

Generally, flat feet do not need to be treated as they won’t cause you any problems. However, you may find that they are causing you pain or problems with your balance. If you have any concerns, then you should speak to your doctor, but here are a few solutions that may help you out.

Stretching

One of the most common causes of flat feet is a tight calf muscle, medically known as Equinus, as the tight muscle can transmit a force on the foot and create a collapse in your foot arch. Often, flat feet sufferers use stretching programs to help limit the flattening effect that a tight calf muscle can have on your foot arch. Yoga is a popular form of exercise for those with flat feet, as the position known as the downward dog targets the muscles at the back of your leg.

You can combine stretching with other muscle exercises that help flat feet. There are many muscles in your feet, but exercises can help develop your intrinsic muscles that can support the arch. You can do very simple exercises to strengthen your feet muscles.

Shoe Inserts/Insoles

Arch supports can be a great way to add extra support for your feet and can help your comfort when wearing shoes. They can effectively help to align bone structures in your feet and to encourage the arch in your foot to rise. Flat feet can feel better when they have shoe insoles as they can alleviate and soothe muscular spasms. Shoe insoles can really help flat feet sufferers and some of the best inserts can be found at insoles.com.

Surgery

Flat foot surgery is the very last measure that sufferers should consider. Many people with flat feet don’t suffer from any additional issues from this condition, and if they do then it is most likely that other measures will help. However, if other solutions have not worked, then surgery is an option.

Surgery on flat feet can vary from the very simple to more complex procedures. Some procedures involve an implant on the back of the foot in order to give the bones more support. More complicated surgery can involve the transferring of joint fusions to help achieve realignment of the foot, in order to re-establish the foot arch.

To inquire about surgical options and whether your flat feet may require a procedure, you should see your doctor.

While flat feet are a common problem that does not usually cause sufferers any adverse effects, if you do start to feel any discomfort or issues, then you should consider some of these measures to help improve your condition.
