Dental Implants: Do I Have Options?

Here is what you need to know about your choices with implants before you make your final decision.

After talking with your dental professional, one thing is clear: you do not want to be fitted for dentures. That leaves the option of investing in dental implants. While the more traditional methods will mean multiple visits as 20 or more implants are used to replace those missing or damaged teeth, there is another possibility to consider. Here is what you need to know about your choices with implants before you make your final decision.

Conventional Implants are an Option

Your dental professional has examined you and confirmed that you are a candidate for implants. If you choose the more traditional approach, there could be a need for reinforcing one or more segments of the jaw bone. This process is referred to as bone grafting.

You are likely to require bone grafts when there is significant damage to the jaw bone. That damage may be due to some type of gum disease or it could be the result of an accident. In any case, your jaw bone must be strengthened before the individual implants can be inserted. Allowing for healing time, that will add a month or so to the overall process.

If you are willing to invest the time as well as the money, it is possible to replace your teeth with implants and restore your smile. While the time involved with every patient varies, be prepared to make regular visits over the next year and a half. That’s how long a complete replacement can take in some cases.

A Modern Twist on Implants

There is another approach that you will want to discuss with your dentist. This is known as all on four implants and has gained a lot of attention from dentists and patients alike. With this approach, four implants or anchors are embedded in your jaw bone. A complete row of upper or lower teeth are then attached to the implants. Once they are in place, they will stay there without the aid of any adhesives. Best of all, they will look just like the real thing.

The amount of time needed for inserting the implants and allowing the healing to take place is much shorter. You may even be able to have the four anchors for the bottom jaw done at the same time as the top. As soon as the minor swelling subsides, it will be a quick process to attach your new teeth.

Another benefit of the all in four solution is that you don’t have to be concerned about bone grafts. The implants are spaced out enough to allow the surgeon to use healthy sections of the jawbone for the insertions.

Now is the time to learn more about each approach to implants. Rest assured that Vaughan dentists are aware of both procedures and can answer any questions that come to mind. Listen closely to the answers and weigh your options carefully. Once the decision is made, get ready for having a smile that’s more brilliant that it has been in years.
