The Chef As The Highest Form of "Doctor"?

A continuation of "The Chef As The Highest Form of Doctor"

Several months ago in one of my other blogs I presented an idea that I believe whose time has now come.[1] Actually it's more accurate to say whose time has come again! That's because there is a history regarding the idea of the chef-doctor and I'm interested in at least pointing to it.

When I speak of the chef-doctor it's not to say that chefs would take on the roles of a diagnostician, prescribing pharmaceuticals, performing surgery (on people) or other strictly "medical" functions.[2] The idea is that chefs generally continue to be chefs only with greater knowledge, enhanced awareness and higher consciousness about what I like to call "real food" (as well as the forces of creation that imbue foods with certain 'chi') that traditionally has been served in meals to individuals who want food to be their "medicine". I believe that people have a Right to ask for food-as-medicine! Do you? I believe the need is now with us to have chefs prepare food-as-medicine!

Now, after just reading the 'caveat' of a cook who
says she "... will not, and cannot respond to ... inquiries" from individuals who "have a question about a medical condition" I am inspired to see how the medical paradigm defines the term "medical condition".

"... A medical condition is a broad term that includes all diseases, lesions and disorders. While the term medical condition generally includes mental illnesses, in some contexts the term is used specifically to denote any illness, injury, or disease except for mental illnesses. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the widely used psychiatric manual that defines all mental disorders, uses the term general medical condition to refer to all diseases, illnesses, and injuries except for mental disorders. ... Some health insurance policies also define a medical condition as any illness, injury, or disease except for psychiatric illnesses.

As it is more value-neutral than terms like disease[3][5], the term medical condition is sometimes preferred by people with health issues that they do not consider deleterious. On the other hand, by emphasizing the medical nature[7] of the condition, this term is sometimes rejected, such as by proponents of the autism rights movement.[4][5]"[6]

Chefs who function as "chef-doctors" (by preparing "food-as-medicine") may also include an understanding of the importance for having happy thoughts and emotions in their preparation of food as well with the recipients of the food before, during and after meals! There are innumerable examples of the long-standing historical practice of this. Prayers before meal time are just one example.

Prayers may also serve as a form of spiritual nourishment since: "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out through the mouth of God."[8]

Do you think that consciousness regarding food can help people to "evolve". Omraam says: "To help humans evolve, it is necessary to explain to them how their thoughts, feelings and behavior affect their psychic and physical bodies."[9]

[2] Therefor the "Chef-Doctor" is a non-medical function. Individuals who come to a "Chef-Doctor" do so knowing this and understanding that the role of the chef-doctor is focused on certain foods and their capacity to support genuine healing of whatever may be ailing the individual. Medical doctors do not generally include "food-as-medicine" in their prescriptions and therefore that leaves a tremendous gap in the whole spectrum of support that can be offered an individual so wanting to be supported through their healing journey. A dietitian does not necessarily include "food-as-medicine" in their suggestions either! The "gap" may grow wider and deeper even though it appears to be inclusive of "nutrition". Yet what will actually fill the gap can only be real food! Something that may have been missing all along! Chef-Doctors realize this and that is why they devote themselves to knowing all there is to know about real food and which foods fill which gaps.

[3] This is the first time I'm seeing acknowledgement from within the medical paradigm regarding the non-"value-neutral" meaning of disease.

[4] I find it encouraging that there are "proponents of the autism rights movement" who reject the term disease being associated with autism.

[5] Dr. Chris Lowthert (DC) and I have had a number of conversations about the term (as well as the myriad labels that the term comes under) and most importantly to address the fear that people have about any so called "disease".

[7] "Medical nature" is another term/phrase that I intend to get "clear" on.
