Brain Chemistry, Activities/"In The Flow" & Ecstasy
In search of ecstatic states that can occur in everyday life.

My most recent inspired notes point to "brain chemistry" and states of ecstasy. What especially got me thinking in this direction is my most recent cross-fertilization between the ideas in Gene Keys (and especially regarding the 64 Siddhi states) where certain amino acids are identified with each Gene Key plus the book "From Ecstasy to Success" by Kala H. Kos. Today I looked up the Siddhi of Ecstasy in Gene Keys to identify the amino acid: Alanine to search for a possible connection. [My initial search was simply entered as ecstasy+alanine and that was not really fruitful for me as I got a predominance of MDMA results - as the "drug" known as "ecstasy" - and that's not what I am searching for. Been there done that ; ~ ) I changed my first term to "ecstatic states" and not confident about using alanine I changed that part to a more all inclusive: "brain chemistry".] One result gave me an article: "Find Your Flow"[1]
and it was here that I have the following quote:
(Mihály Csíkszentmihályi)[2] found that people who were happy routinely engaged in activities that made profound positive changes in brain chemistry and led to states of ecstasy. These ecstatic states occurred in everyday life, sometimes planned, and sometimes part of the persons every day routine."
In addition to the Siddhi of Ecstasy we may also consider the 30th Siddhi of Rapture. Richard Rudd in his discourse on this 30th Gene Key says: “The 30th and 29th (Devotion) Siddhis represent an archetypal stream within you DNA that causes powerful mutations in your endocrine system. These result in the ongoing production of certain rarefied hormones within the brain chemistry of the pineal gland that induce states of great devotion and divine rapture. …”

"All Emotions Are Brain Chemistry":
"The mind, like Hollywood, recognizes that it has to give its audience something new when it is telling us the same old story. One of the ways it keeps the stories fresh is by dressing it up with new actors, new scenery, or new dialog. The best way, is to enhance the story with feeling.
In Hollywood they have spent a lot of time and money to enhance the movies so that we get the feeling that we are almost right there in the story. The emergence of 3-D is one example. Years ago they tried ‘smell-o-vision’ where they sprayed aromas into the theater; at amusement parks, they have rides where you sit and watch a 3-D movie and the chair rocks and bumps up and down to the action on the screen – all of which are attempts to give us a physical enhancement of the story to make it seem ‘real’.
The mind does exactly the same thing, but it does it through our chemistry. How better to convince us that a story is real than to add emotions or fear sensations to the story? Remember, all emotions are brain chemistry. There are more receptor sites for brain chemistry in the Solar Plexus than anywhere else in the body except the brain itself. When the mind is telling us how we are failing to meet holiday expectations, if it adds in a little chemistry, we can feel very sad about it all – and fall into the belief that the story is real. When the body experiences danger, there is a natural fear response which triggers the release of adrenalin so we can fight or run. A little boost of adrenalin along with a scary mental story and presto, we interpret the story as something to feel fearful about. When we feel fear in the body we can easily believe that the fear the story is describing - is real."[4]

After my call with New Medicine practitioner Dr. Chris (DC) I had several pages of notes that sparked additional research for me! One potential supporting theme for his forthcoming article on the Nature of Pain is understanding basic brain chemistry. We mentioned "creating new synapses" in our conversation and that immediately launched me into starting several searches that included YouTube animations[5] on this and my search results include the following "Transcript for How Neurotransmission Works Video" -
"Communication between two neurons begins when an electrical impulse called an action potential travels along the axon of a pre-synaptic neuron toward the axon terminal. The action potential cannot cross the synaptic space. When it reaches the axon terminal, it causes membranous sacs, called vesicles, to move toward the membrane of the axon terminal. ..."[6]

Personal Notes:
I was first introduced to the term "flow" through a friendly acquaintance in 1986 but without reference to Mihály. I'm grateful to learn of this professor now!
I really like the idea that "ecstatic states occurred in everyday life"! It fits very well within my reasons for starting this search.
Possibly as an aside - In my Church days (& daze) through the 70's we sang a song to the tune of "O Tannenbaum": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_Tannenbaum#Melody
with the words: "We're in the flow oh in the flow, oh hallelujah in the flow ..."
