Lead Science Group AAAS WITH ANTI ORGANIC PRESIDENT SAYS NO ON 37; SALK SCIENTIST SAYS YES FOR LABELING
November 2, 2012
In a shocking week of headlines related to the Nation's Science lead Org, AAAS coming out No on 37, and Grist Magazine calling it President Nina Federoff, its president out for her stand, local scientists entered the fray at a GMO panel at USCD October 23/
Dr. Maarteen Chrispeel, a noted Biology professor called the Yes on 37 Labelers Paranoid. Jimbo Someck, said, yes he is paranoid about GMO foods; Meanwhile Dr.Dave R. Schubert, professor and head of the Cellular Neurobiology Laboratory, at Salk Institute, on the panel, confirmed his belief that GMO trials have never been adequately conducted on humans. He agreed with the Yes on 37 Campaign premise, that we, who are now unknowingly eating GMO foods without our knowledge, are in a science experiment with unknown untested consequences.
Others on the panel, including Jeffrey M. Smith, director of the new film Genetic Roulette, spoke of his research that the FDA, that is supposedly monitoring the safety of GMO foods, basically gives a rubber stamp to new products and refers back to Monsanto, as an example, to be in charge of their own scientific testing.
Dr. Chrispeels is a noted Biotech supporter and among the lead local Biotech advocates. In his own statement, that agree with AAA President Dr. Federoff, called our State Department Czar of GE, by Grist Magazine, holds the position that organic foods have not been adequately studies to say they are better than conventional foods.
Dr. Federoff's position, who touts GE, has said: "Then there are the romantic agri-myths, like the “organic” one, which lots of people have bought into. It goes like this: Organic food, farmed using manure instead of chemicals, is better for you and better for the land. None of that’s true-nitrogen is nitrogen-but it’s pretty good marketing if you’re selling poor produce at exorbitant prices. (Organic farming is inefficient, so production costs are generally higher."
A spokesperson for the National Academy of Sciences told the Sacramento Bee that it “has not evaluated whether it’s safe to eat genetically engineered food.”
Simon points out that the chair of the AAAS Board is Nina Fedoroff.
Fedoroff is closely aligned with the corporate funded No on 37 campaign.

"As for Fedoroff, Clinton’s science czar, her entry is full of similar rhetoric {as Monsanto} She goes over the line, though, with this statement.
Fact: Modern genetic modification of crops is responsible for most of the crop yield increases of recent years.
Philpott continued: "Gurian-Sherman has a doctorate in plant pathology from Berkeley and has worked on GMO policy for the USDA and EPA. He is the author, most recently, of the report “Failure to Yield,” which documents the, well, failure of GMOs to deliver real gains in crop yield, despite much industry claptrap to the contrary. Gurian-Sherman just told me he wasn’t approached to conrtribute. That just seems silly to me."
Philpott says, "The Gurian-Sherman paper {', "Failure to Yield" } shreds that notion. It’s a sad but all too familiar spectacle to see a public servant mouthing inaccuracies on behalf of some dodgy industry."
Failure to Yield
The report recommends that the U.S. Department of Agriculture, state agricultural agencies, and universities increase research and development for proven approaches to boost crop yields. Those approaches should include modern conventional plant breeding methods, sustainable and organic farming, and other sophisticated farming practices that do not require farmers to pay significant upfront costs. The report also recommends that U.S. food aid organizations make these more promising and affordable alternatives available to farmers in developing countries.
“If we are going to make headway in combating hunger due to overpopulation and climate change, we will need to increase crop yields,” said Gurian-Sherman. “Traditional breeding outperforms genetic engineering hands down.” --Union of Concerned Scientists, 2009

Has one of the nation’s premiere scientific organizations been captured by big corporations?
Michelle Simon of Grist Magazine says yes.
Stacy Malkan of the Yes on 37 Campaign says yes.
Charlie Cray of Greenpeace says yes.
But the scientific organization in question – the American Association for the Advancement of Science – says no.

Research
Dave R. Schubert, professor and head of the Cellular Neurobiology Laboratory, studies hormones and other substances that affect the activities and survival of brain cells. Much of his research is providing new insights into Alzheimer's disease and other degenerative brain disorders.
Schubert has been studying beta amyloid protein, a substance that accumulates in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. Schubert has shown that this protein can cause nerve cell death, while vitamin E can protect cells from its toxic effects.
A recent study conducted by scientists at UCSD showed that Vitamin E does, in fact, slow the progression of Alzheimer's. Schubert's lab also is studying the mechanisms of cell death in Parkinson's disease, stroke and ischemia, with the goal of trying to identify drugs that inhibit these processes.
Maarteen Chrispeels,
UCSD BIOLOGY

A year after aquaporins were described in animal cells (by Nobel Laureate Peter Agre’s lab) the Chrispeels lab found homologous proteins in the tonoplasts of plants and aquaporins became the main focus of the lab until Chrispeels’ retirement from research in 2007. The discovery of aquaporins in plants can be said to have revolutionized the study of plant-water relations. Together with his collaborators Chrispeels published some 180 research papers and 50 reviews and book chapters.
Teaching
For many years Professor Chrispeels taught courses in plant biology at different levels (introductory courses for non-science majors or for science majors, or advanced courses in plant development and plant biotechnology. To aid in teaching he and his former student David Sadava co-wrote or edited several books, including Plants, Food and People (1977), Plants, Genes and Agriculture (1994) and Plants, Genes and Crop Biotechnology (2003). After his retirement from research he continued to teach at the university and became involved in outreach to San Diego area high schools.
Public service and honors
For more than 25 years Chrispeels played an active role in the journal Plant Physiology, first as a member of the editorial board, then as an associate member, and from 1990 to 1997 as its Editor in Chief. For 15 years he was involved with the Millennium Science Initiative in Chile and became the convener of the Program Committee that evaluates research proposals from Chilean Scientists. As director of the SDCMA he organized ten major symposia and other events for San Diego area plant biologists. He also produced a colorful 16-page brochure entitled Foods from Genetically Engineered Crops that was widely distributed throughout the world.
His work was recognized by his peers through his election to the US National Academy of Sciences (1996), and receipt of the Stephen Hales Prize of the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) in 1996. In 2000 he received a Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Guelph (Canada) and was elected to the rank of Fellow of the ASPB in 2006. In 2007 he became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and in 2008 he was elected to Foreign Corresponding membership in the Academia Chilena de Ciencias.
Industrial activities
Professor Chrispeels holds several patents, has consulted for a number of biotechnology companies and is the co-founder of two companies: Phylogics (with Dr. Jeffrey Moore) and Arterra Biosciences in Naples, Italy (with Dr. Gabriella Colucci).
Maarten Chrispeels received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and was a postdoctoral fellow at the DOE Plant Research Laboratory at Michigan State University. Professor Chrispeels was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He is the editor in chief of Plant Physiology.
If GMO companies have their way, all seeds will be GMO within a matter of years. GMO Seeds and Organic Seeds cannot co-exist. GMO Seeds contaminate Organic Seeds.
All People of the world are intended to Co-Exist, and stealing our Sacred Seed heritage disallows this.
Now is time--before Nov 6 to open an Honest Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Food. It is one thing for A No on 37 to win at the polls Nov. 6, but if San Diego Farmers who now only use heirloom and conventional seeds, are being taken in by a $44 Million Campaign of Deception, that will encourage GMO seeds, that is the equivalent of Voter suppression, It is time for Hillcrest Shoppers to ask their local farmers this Sunday, November 3, why or why not they are voting YES on 37 or No on 37. The majority of arguments being promoted now by the NO on 37 Campaign are untrue; yet many local San Diego farmers will be voting No based on these presumptions. This Sunday, ask your Hillcrest Farmer if he i voting YES or NO. Spend your grocery dollar accordingly.
