Arundo Donax, typically grown in the southern regions of France, is the species of cane that forms the building material for bassoon, oboe and clarinet reeds. Before Arundo Donax can be formed and shaped into reeds, it must be cured to remove the pith from the fibers of the cane. If the pith is not properly removed, the finished reed will be unstable and difficult to play on and will warp as it ages, creating significant difficulty for the musician.
