Foods that are good for your heart

With the desire to have a healthy heart and body, we must all change our lifestyles. The McDonald's triple cheeseburger and fries is out and the new green salad with tons of broccoli is in. From broccoli and sweet potato fries to the wonderful glass of organic red wine, we are all in a health conscious mood. The food gather's diet comes to mind, as we think of exactly what is heart healthy. Foods that are whole grains, vegetables , fruits and oils of the trees. Now these are the things that goodness is made of.

Which foods are heart healthy? You decide for yourself.

1. Salmon

With omega 3, it is heart healthy.

Add a little seasoning and some lemon and bake it in the oven. Keep away from all fried foods.

2. Flax seeds (freshly ground) - flax seeds must be eaten within ten minutes of grinding them. Do not ever cook with them.

Omega-3 fatty acids, and they contain fiber and phytoestrogens

You can add some ground flax seeds to some yogurt and add a bit of cayenne for circulation. Top it off with some cut bananas or peaches.

3. Stone cut Oatmeal

Omega3-fatty acids, soluble fiber, magnesium, calcium, folate, niacin and potassium

A big bowl of oatmeal, with some honey and cinnamon, nothing better. Drop the butter and the milk though.

4. Almonds and walnuts

Plant omega-3 fatty acids; vitamin E; magnesium; fiber and more.

Dr. Cayce said, "Anyone who eats 3 almonds a day would never worry about cancer." He was talking about green almonds, but almonds are the best nuts to snack on and eat.

5. Organic red wine

Reservatrol and catechins

Add a glass of organic wine to your meal and enjoy your new found good health aid it will reduce you HDL levels.

6. Tuna, but not white tuna

Omega-3 fatty acids; folate; niacin.

Never use white tuna as it is the highest in mercury. A wonderful green salad with some tuna salad on top.

7. Brown rice

Fiber, b complex vitamins, niacin, magnesium

Alton Brown's recipe for brown rice is simply 1.5 cups of brown rice, 2.5 cups of boiling water, salt. Place all in the oven, covered with some foil. Bake one hour and then fluff the rice.

8. Blueberries

Beta-carotene and lutein (carotenoids); anthocyanin (a flavonoid); ellagic acid (a polyphenol); vitamin C; folate; calcium, magnesium; potassium; fiber.

You can top yogurt with blueberries or simply put them in a fruit salad.

9. Carrots

Alpha-carotene (a carotenoid); fiber.

Try some nice carrot slaw with some green cabbage, full of vitamin C.

10. Black or kidney beans

B-complex vitamins;soluble fiber, niacin; folate; omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium; calcium.

Nothing better than a big bowl of vegetable soup that contains some beans for fiber and protein.

Eating foods for a healthy heart is not difficult. Dr. Ornish says you should limit all fats to between 10-15 percent. Some say his diet is too restrictive, but it has come with much success.

Here is a chart to rely on for some very good ways to stay healthy:
